Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

Tri-Aligns are perhaps misunderstood brakes. They take a little patience to set up, but are very effective stoppers. Also I think are affected by lever choice. V brakes are mechanically superior though, and are better suited to my current terrain. I'm hanging on to the older brakes for when...

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

Correct, the brakes in my photo are Avid V brakes. These replace a set of TriAligns which I removed from the frame. I said this in my first post :).

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

Ha, I obviously know it was there, but the issue I had was when I dry-fitted the brake, I could not get enough tension for the brake to lift away from the rim. Once I'd fitted the brake to the frame snugly, adjusting the tension was easy.

OK, so is the sleeve shown in the Avid diagram different?

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

And against expectations, there is adequate tension once the brake assembly is fitted to the frame. So all sorted without spending a cent.

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

Once again, thank you for all of your advice. I used the collar from the TriAligns along with a longer bolt from my spares. Here's my version of an exploded diagram showing the parts used.

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

Will do. Plan B will be those studs, because they are an elegant solution. I have a couple of other Bonties. I too fell in love with the bikes at the time, and never found anything I liked better.

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

I'll see how I get on with the salvaged part from the old TriAligns first, but many thanks for this offer.

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

Thanks all for your help. I found the collars inside the only one pair of the removed TriAligns, so they must be the rears. They are as shown in the Avid parts diagram, so surely are part of the TriAligns, rather than being a part supplied with the bike? I have a good stock of steel and ti...

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

That sounds like a solution. For the stud, anyway. If I cannot find a way of increasing the tension in the Avid SDs, I'll have to look for a more adjustable brake. I've found the thread you referred to, so I'll make contact with Synlos. Thank you.

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

TriAligns are direct fix to the stay stubs. The bolt provides rigidity. And the spring can be tightened or loosened just by using a spanner. When I removed those old Avids, I found myself with neither boss, nor any methos od tensioning the reaplcement brakes.

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

Nope. TriAligns were fitted simply with bolts directly into the frame. Those brakes had been on the frame from new.

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

I'm sure the diameter is slightly smaller than standard. I found some bosses in my spares, but they don't screw into the holes. The brakes I'm trying to fit are Avid SDs. Unless I'm missing something really obvious, I cannot see how the spring can be adjusted.

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

I need more than that. I need a method of adjusting the spring tension of my V brakes. One centred spring hole is inadequate because there is no tension. I also need to know where to source bosses, and the size of those bosses.

Canti brake bosses missing - what do I need?

I recently removed some TriAligns from my old Bontrager Race frame with the intention of fitting V brakes. Front is no issue, but the seat stays have only a shallow bracket with no boss, and just a single spring hole. What do I need in order to be able to fit V brakes to this frame? Thank you.

Wanted: Shimano XTR RD-M950 or equivalent - medium cage

My son managed to mangle the derailleur on one of my bikes. The inner plate has broken in half. I am therefore looking a suitable inner cage plate - I think the RD-M739 XT plate is identical.

How do I post a bike overseas (within EU)?

Can anyone recommend a courier for shipping a bike (frame only) from the UK to another EU country? I've tried a few websites but the volumetric weight seems to be an issue. Surely it can't be that difficult to post a large, lightweight box?

Re: My new old Bontrager Looks pretty much like this one of mine which I think is a '94. Mine gets used for commuting and towing a trailer. Superb ride.
