Advice request - steerers and stems =]

oops - sorry everyone who I ignored - I kind went off radar a bit - but as an Update: @pete_mcc - agreed, thank you - this is sensible advice which is exactly what I ended up doing! @mk one - same agreed, done! So I bought a Marin stem off eBay- and it was all right according to my callipers...

Exactly! I can't believe it's not been done just for the profit! xD

Is there a reason they don't do splined steerers and stems? I mean maybe the accuracy is not there yet, but you'd think if they do it for cranks it could be done for the head end. Not that it would help for retros. And maybe the already do...

haha - I just hope it wasn't me in that case xD The thing is when, I got it a couple of weeks ago, it looked almost unused I dinged the top tube the other day (much to my annoyance and dismay) but have only been on 2 rides with it (it's lovely to ride though - good old days!). I'm wondering if...

Advice request - steerers and stems =]

Look who found the reply button - my power is growing!! Thanks, yes - think you may be right - my callipers were very cheap, 10 years ago, so they are by no means accurate, but after several readings it seems like there is some ovalisation there and I guess the stem metal stretched a bit top to...

aaaand that stem, when clamped, is ovalised - not sure if that's a normal expectation.

Thanks 2manyoranges - haha ok I'll measure and give accurate measurements here: (Bare in mind the cheapness of the callipers) Steerer Diameter - "Front to Back": 28.5mm / 1.120" Steerer Diameter - "Left to Right": 28.56mm / 1.125" Stem (clamped) Diameter - "Front to Back": 29.37mm / 1.154" Stem...

Advice request - steerers and stems =]

Gtpulse - Yeah - glad it's not just me who's a bit confused - I could only guess, as marc two tone says, that the stem has widened over time - I guess that can happen, I mean it is like 25 years old. Either way - yes I will get another stem to check, then failing that I'll find a shim. Top Cap...

Advice request - steerers and stems =]

I'm not sure if I should try and find some sort of shim (obviously not standards step down, or try another stem, if I can find another Marin lite one (I'd rather stay original).

using some cheap callipers - Steerer is defo just under 1"1/8 - very slightly oval - certainly not only 1" Stem gap, when bolts are loose, is larger than 1"1/8 but no where near 1"1/4 - basically a difference just shy of 2mm...

Advice request - steerers and stems =]

Thanks raidan73 - it could be a 1.6mm gap - looking again, it might be bigger than 1mm.

Advice request - steerers and stems =]

Thanks jimo746! I'll take some pics in a mo - it's weird, I looked up the conversion and in theory the diff between a 1"1/8 and a 1" is just over 3mm - this gap is barely 1mm, but defo more than .5mm. I'll take a few more measurements. Normally I would have thought it was ovalised, but there...

Thanks Gtpulse - good point! It is a Marin Lite stem - but maybe it is from the next year on, but looking at the bike in the catalogue uploaded to this site (https://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/d/128424-3/Marin_1996_18_rb.jpg), it does look the same. I will try and take some pictures in...

Advice request - steerers and stems =]

Hello All! I have a bit of a weird issue which I can't work out: I bought a really nice condition '96 Pine Mountain and it's all really lush except - whilst riding, the stem mis aligns from the wheel a little over time (10 mins). For reference it has the original rigid forks on. After...

FOR SALE: RETRO Club Roost Frame 15.5" (ish)

Hey Everyone, I have a Club Roost Evo Slalom frame for sale. It is in mint condition, never used and stored in plastic pallet wrap for the last 6 months. I bought it as I had always wanted one since being a kid (younger adult) and jumped at the chance when I saw it on ebay a while back...
