Weinmann brake levers

Hi,

I'm looking for help again. Bought these Weinmann levers and am struggling with these wee bits. I'm thinking they go inside, rounded side first, and the brake cable goes through them, perhaps, but how do they stay in place?

Put them on the ends of the outer brake cable/housing and then you should be able to feed the outer cable into the inside of the lever where the inner cable threads through. So, it's the cable housing that keeps them in place. They should be a fairly snug fit on the end of the outer.

Hi again, I realise I bought retro aero levers instead of non-aero. Struggling to work out how the cable comes out of the hood housing to lay against the bars? There isn't any part of the hood that is recessed or of a half moon shape for it to exit from, which I'd expect.

I had bought a pair of bars with a recess in the bars for a cable (unintentionally) but unfortunately, again, made a mistake. It was 2mm to wide to fit in the quill stem.

Shall I just give up and buy a pair of non-aero levers? Or a new quill stem to fit the bars with the recess for the brake housing?

Yes, I can see from your photo that there's no cut-out part for the cable to exit through - you're right, most aero levers do have that. I can only guess that the cable is just meant to go out of the side, at a logical point - it looks like there are areas at the sides where it's just the rubber hood, not the plastic part, so the cable can fit under the rubber hood at those points? I suspect it will be more obvious when the levers are mounted on the bars.

It sounds like you need a new quill stem anyway, if it doesn't fit your bars, so I guess it makes sense to use the levers you have, seeing as your bars have the recess for the cables on them?

I have a quill stem that fits the bars that I have fitted. I've tried to fit these aero levers but it just leaves a bulge when exiting the hood, there doesn't seem to be a logical point. I've realised after purchase that they are Weinmann hoods on a Dia Compe set of levers.

I have the original bar I bought which has a recess for the cables, but it doesn't fit the current quill stem - a couple of mm too wide at the centre point. It has a raised area in the middle.

So, I could either get a quill stem that fits the bars with the recess for the cable housing so it lies flat, or buy new levers that are non-aero and easier to fit and adjust. I must admit I prefer the non-aero look. Hmm. I've learned such a lot building this bike up. Yet a new quill stem would be cheaper.

Thanks for your advice, it's such a learning curve. The bike came with the original quill stem but had been changed to flat bars.

I feel your pain. I've lost count of the number of times I've had issues with stem and bar combinations (there are at least 3 different common sizes, 25.8mm, 26mm and 26.2mm, and it's not uncommon for people to list the wrong size when selling). I've had to resort to shims for the bars on a few occasions because I didn't want to get a new stem or bars. That is an option, though they can be a bit fiddly to use, and you have to be 1000% sure you've got the measurements right.

Those levers do look unusual, but I guess that's the result of the hoods not being the originals which is obviously complicating things.

When I bought the first set of bars, they were listed correctly at 26mm but I stupidly thought there were only slim (25.and fat clamp areas (31ish) and presumed the guy had just rounded up the 25.8 to 26mm .

So much have I learned and am still to learn on this bike. I'll resell at a great loss but perhaps it's not a loss if I've gained so much knowledge (and a bag of spare parts ).

It's heartening to know others also have problems.

Think I'll go with a set of non-aero levers for this project. I will then have a set of aero levers and a suitable bar for them for another project, subject to a 26mm clamp quill stem .

Yeah, all founds very familiar! I'm pretty sure I've never built up a bike without at least one thing occurring that I'd never come across before with a bike. The last one that springs to mind is a brake cable that had become totally rusted stuck in a brake adjuster, which led to me melting a part of the brake in an attempt to free the cable .

I think to fit these levers, you're meant to drill the bars. A hole where the lever is to thread the cable into the bars and another hole near the stem for the cable to exit the bars (each side of course).
Not something I'd be comfortable in doing or riding
