Serial number simply tells you when the frame was produced. Not what model year it was.

No different to now where the next years bikes are released in around October.

The zaskar above is a 98.
Completely understand it was built for the 1998 release 👍🏻.

Isn’t it obscured though that we have to not refer to them with the date that’s actually printed on them.

Because production date in many items doesn’t translate to either a release date or MY.

Think how long it takes from the actual production of a frame , until it’s sat inside a retailer ready to sell.
