We've done this one before, but it's been a while. This is aimed at the kind of bike that the vast majority of us probably started out with. In my era that was Exage equipped bikes for my mates and I, and Mountain LX if you were really lucky. So we're saying no to Deore, Deore DX, XT, XTR and the equivalents from the other big names. No hanging 200GS from a Yeti either, cos we'll know what you're up to! Nothing custom built. No Ringle stems. Think off the shelf bikes with one of those fancy Zoom stems and a Fred Salmon brake booster. That's where we're aiming here.

The theme months can sometimes have a few grey areas and potential for taking advantages of loopholes but if everyone keeps in the spirit of the competition then we'll be alright I'm sure. The overriding caveat is that my decision is final!

There's a 20 bike entry limit on this month, so don't hang around.

Useful for the poll if you can structure your nomination as follows:

username's Year Manufacturer Model , e.g. @al's 1995 weird bouncy thing
Image(s) MAXIMUM OF 2
Finally please include a link to your machine in the relevant Reader's Bikes section. If you don't have an existing post now is the time to add one with as much detail as you like!
Link to all the rules http://www.retrobike.co.uk/wiki/BoTM_Rules

Nominations thread will run from now until the end of August. Entries submitted after August 31st will not be counted. The poll will go up shortly after the nominations close and will run for a week.

"No hanging 200GS from a Yeti either, cos we'll know what you're up to!"

HA! Damn that is funny....

Maybe we should have a BoTM contest with absurd setup's in the fall eh.

Right let's kick this low-end MTB show off!

@27motorhead's 1988 Specialized Hardrock

This is the lowest spec and biggest MTB I have ever owned! I bought it a few years back to just rob the Suntour parts of it as the frame is a maHOOsive 22.5" (I'm only 5' 7" / 170cm).

However, I soon realised that I could ride it and the upright position makes it a super comfy cruiser and makes me grin every time I ride it.

Build thread here: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/1988-specialized-hardrock.480412/

Wish I had better photos, but bikes in storage ATM...

OOO, chain stay U Brake for the win!!

I LOVE this bike Phill! A proper low-end beauty 😍

Was a joy to work on with some really quirky/unusually detailed components and a proper agricultural feel.

Love the Suntour and that U-brake has some serious bite
My friend had one just like that, brings back memories! He was one of the first of my friends to get a mountain bike... I was still riding a GT Pro Performer in 1988 😄

That’s pretty cool. Riding around on a GT Pro Performer!!! 😍. In 1990/91 after my MBK was stolen and I was waiting for my GT avalanche to arrive, I repeatedly borrowed my brothers Raleigh Mag Burner to try and ride off road! That BMX eventually got donated to my grans paperboy who also had his mountain bike stolen…

Ok. Go on then.

Tootyred Muddy Fox Courier Comp....think its 89...

No build thread, it was just a complete nut and bolt rebuild of a £40 bike.😂

I think you need a L O N G E R stem!!! ;)

Yes 1989. Exage Mountain LX was only released for one year only which helps date these bikes.

That looks in amazing condition, no doubt all thanks to your handy work as usual. Looks pretty original too.

Think they'll be a lot of love for some of these bikes because these lower end machines were peoples first MTB's, so lots of rose tinted glasses memories being stirred...
