K2 OZ Full Suspension Mountain Bike, Mystery, Early 2000s?

James717

Retro Newbie
Hi, I have this k2? OZ full suspension mountain bike, I think from the early 2000s. It has a sticker saying www.k2sports.ch on it, which seems to be where it was distributed in Klosters, Switzerland. Does anyone recognise this model. Can you help me identify it to the exact year etc, and find out more about it please? Also, Is the top tube meant to be like that, just open?

Thanks

James

Hi, I'm a K2 mountain bike fan.
We do have in the Classic-bike section of a German MTB forum a nice documentation of K2 bikes

K2 bikes went through many ups and downs. Yours is from the generation after K2 sold almost only Proflex designed bikes.

Just your model is rather something like a cheap entry level full suspension bike, for most users here not very interesting, sorry to say. Therefore you may not get a lot of feedback.
It looks like it has an Deore rear derailleur, from the Deore M510 group (without DX, LX or XT in the name). This was a pricing-wise attractive group, offered in the year 2000, with 9-speed.
If it's original part it would confirm the approximately year 2000 date of this bike.
The SYNC suspension fork is also a cheap part only sold as OEM product.

It looks like you do like your bike, so please keep on having fun with it.

Thanks a lot for the information. Yes, I'd worked out it wasn't a high end bike. But the build quality is good, and it rides really well. A very good design.

Hi Joglo, can you tell me, is the seatpost meant to be like that, not connected to the frame? Thanks

The seatpost seems to be correct as it is,
it's a bit of an issue with that design that you can not lower the seatpost too much, because it will collide than with the moving rear triangle.

Thanks for the information Joglo. I looked at similar mountain bikes and realised that the design is correct too. It's just the bike is missing a black stopper on top of the lower frame.

If you can find the frame number that might help working out the year. I haven't seen one of these before, but the frame number scheme may match another manufacturer.

Hi, I can't find a bike the same either. It has stickers on it that say www.k2sports.ch - I have traced that back using the wayback machine to K2 Sports based in Switzerland. On the bottom of the frame, at the bottom bracket, it has A865-8 and UOYK33997 stamped on it, or it could be U0YK33997. It rides very smoothly and feels good quality, although I appreciate the parts aren't high spec. It would be interesting to trace it back further.

I should think it's U0YK33997 - The second character is likely to be a number 0. That would also indicate a bike from Year 2000. Thanks for this!
