92 team marin......well....almost....

Whilst I'm awaiting stuff, thought i would go through a few bits as really need to make a decision on wheels before i go much further.

The old wheels were sadly worn to death. The rims were so thin, i could actually squeeze the walls together with my finger on one rim!

Poor old girl had done some heavy commuter miles from what I understand.

The tyres were amazing.....amazing that they still worked that is, as they literally disintegrated as I took them off 😂 They were like removing pork crackling!

Amazingly the hubs actually cleaned up ok......but......they are 32 hole.....and all my rims are 36...🤣

So they have been passed on to a mates project.

I want 8 speed, as 12 -28 8 speed suits me just fine with 24/36/46 up top. Nice small jumps...easy stress free riding......comfortable....good word.

Im thinking of using XT M732/M730 hubs....those of you paying attention will know they are 7 speed.....well yes....but I might do another 8 speed transplant onto a 130mm hub I've spare....to make it 135mm finished OLD.

Watch this space.....

Will probably try some rim colour combos tomorrow to see whats what.

Watching this space because I have a set of wheels I need to do similar to. M560 that I previously respaced down to 130 but now no longer have a use for them in that spacing so thinking 135 with a 8 speed freehub would be much more useful

If they started life as 135, it doesn't really work. The reason is the dish becomes an issue. A 130mm hub is 5mm shorter body than a 135mm....the internals (at least on xt) are actually identical save the spindle length.

If you add 5mm to the drive side on a standard 135mm 7 speed hub to accommodate an 5mm longer 8 speed hub, the drive side flange comes in 5mm, but the non drive obviously moves with it. The percentage tension becomes an issue as its about 100 % over 45 %. It can be done, but I would say at the cost of some much weaker wheels.

On an 130 hub, with a shorter body, this is a avoided slightly. Essentially you end up with the same spec as a more modern 8 speed hub flange size.

I will put up some pictures as i go....hopefully it woll make more sense....

Hmm does that mean I already have a 100% over 45% wheel from spacing down from 135 to 130 by removing 5mm spacer from the nds? Has that had the same effect on flange to centre line as adding 5mm to the ds of a 135 hub? It's making my head hurt which I'm blaming on dry January

Now please put some more nice purple pictures up to relax my brain

Got back just in time to get a quick shot of some calming purpleness.....

Just enough sun left to see the point of the powder faffing.......

Decals are in neon yellow......and before anybody says anything......the frames are absolutely identical and even Marin mixed and matched them.....plus the florescent decals all say that! 😉......

I've gone my own way with placement too.....sorry catalogue guys...I know its all just so wrong...😂

That really is a beautiful colour. Will be intetesting to see what rim colours you go for too, and how far off piste it goes, not that I'd know 😂. That welding you had done on the fork was amazing, i can see why you'd need someone you can trust to do that.
