I did a 150 km spin yesterday & was really surprised how well it climbed, even with a 42/23 on digs up to 13%. Once you get it rolling momentum seems to keep it going :) Its a difrent style to modern lightweight bikes. I was even thinking about using the sbdu for a few flatter low...

Starting to take shape... Brake hoods, proper cable guides, sort out saddle / bar height, polish up the aluminium bits etc... to go; but went for a quick spin (Hence the pedals) & it felt great :D

A quick dry build to see if everything fits... All good except....
I had a Campag Super Record Italian thread 115mm bottom bracket ready to go on the bike. The bike has Campag British thread 111mm bottom bracket (Sealed Bearing). :?

Frame arrived :) Surprisingly the fork numbers match. PJ2 87. I checked to see if the original number was possibly interfered with & ... no its good.

It took a bit of searching but I eventually found a set of forks that matched the red ones on my soon to be landed bike. They are from a '87/88 753 SBDU.
I was surprised how much searching I had to do to find a matching set :? I was beginning to believe they were not Raleigh at all as...

That's a good point about the forks MrW. They are definitely not original & (Now that you've pointed it out) even look different to what tey should be....
