    KHS Montana Comp 1993

For me it was a choice between dark red and dark blue... I'm not sure if I would have gone for the pink, I feel like by 1993 grunge was in and the late-80s neon color fad was over... Looking back now though I do like the neon pink and blue a lot.

    1991 "Paramount" PDG-70 build

One minor tragedy during the build… the rubber XT brake lever hoods were in near perfect condition until 2 days ago, when something I was using (I suspect maybe the Pledge polish I was using to shine up the parts) contacted some areas of them and turned those areas into basically sticky black...

    1991 "Paramount" PDG-70 build

Pretty pleased to have finished (almost..) my first actual vintage build. I've been interested in early 90's MTBs since pretty much when they were current, and have been lurking here for ages, but this is my first actual build. Story of the bike is a bit random, I never was particularly into...

    KHS Montana Comp 1993

Ooh, nice. I agonized over (spending my life savings on) this bike vs the Tange Prestige Specialized Stumpjumper back in 1993 (also at the age of 13...). I eventually went with the Stumpjumper but I still have the full specs of both bikes memorized, and I'm sure I'd have been just as happy with...

Anyone have details on how the Avocet 30 cyclocomputer magnet ring works?

My understanding is that there are no moving parts. The sensor is a coil of wire that passes through the changing magnetic field from the excitor ring, which generates a changing electric current in the coil, and this is what the computer detects and figures out your speed from. Seems overly...

Anyone have details on how the Avocet 30 cyclocomputer magnet ring works?

Final attempt, with new magnet orientation. Absolutely no difference. I'm coming to the conclusion that the problem was never the magnet ring, but the computer itself. Calibration doesn't help either, as the range of available wheel diameters is pretty narrow.

Anyone have details on how the Avocet 30 cyclocomputer magnet ring works?

Interesting (and disappointing) to hear. There was a time when these were everywhere though, so they're kind of iconic (at least to me) and I always wanted one. My old Specialized SpeedZone from the same era is still going strong - I think that was made in Japan by Cateye though, unlike the US...

Anyone have details on how the Avocet 30 cyclocomputer magnet ring works?

Hah, that's how I got this one (well, I offered $5 to take it off a bike at a garage sale, and the seller accepted) I've now spent $12 on batteries, $18 on the magnetic field film, and several hours on CAD and 3D printing :P It's a hobby, I tell myself.

Anyone have details on how the Avocet 30 cyclocomputer magnet ring works?

I'm going to try one more time with fewer magnets in a different orientation, before giving up

Anyone have details on how the Avocet 30 cyclocomputer magnet ring works?

Well, I tried... remagnetizing the original ring seemed to be ineffective, so I designed and 3d printed a new ring with 10 neodymium magnets, opposing each other to try to replicate 20 poles... the magnetic field viewing film shows the original and the new ring. Unfortunately, it has exactly...

How important is period correct cable?

The 1991 Paramount PDG restoration is coming along. I decided to replace the cables with new stuff with orange housing to match the orange spatter/highlights on the frame. Just basic Jagwire OEM quality stuff, my guess was that this would be comparable to cable from days of yore. I do realize...

How to shine up old anodized aluminum?

Thanks, that makes sense. I'm going to leave them be!

How to shine up old anodized aluminum?

If it's a clue to how these marks occurred, one thing to note is that this bike is from Minnesota, USA, where we have very cold winters, and a lot of salt is put on the roads. The original owner hadn't taken the best care of the bike, and I would not be surprised if it was ridden in the winter...

How to shine up old anodized aluminum?

For what it's worth, I've no intention for this bike to look brand new - the overall condition of all of it is too rough anyway, and I'm going to ride it. I'm definitely not getting parts re-anodized. I'd like it to look as true as possible to how it looked in the early 90's, but that will...

How to shine up old anodized aluminum?

I'm not sure, I'm new to trying to restore an older bike like this. I tried to take some clear photos. The parts are all 1991 Deore XT, so the original finish is probably familiar to everyone here. Here's an example of the blotchiness: This brake arm was lightly rubbed with the '0' grade...
