Re: Re:
Very nice! And thank you for reminding me that I have an ancient set of Schwalbe city tyres hiding at the back of the garage to convert my TIMBERLINE into a mean, green street machine!
Don't suppose anyone's got a spare set of Araya AP-21 wheels so I can swap wheels instead of swapping...
Re: Re:
Any recommendations for handlebars? The blue ones are 680mm wide and I reckon I could happily have my hands at least half a hand further out, say a couple of inches each way, so maybe around 740-760mm? I saw some Renthals in my local MTB shop that had little 10mm markers on the ends...
Thank you!
I have to agree that it does look better on the matching rigid forks but now that I'm more old git than angry student I need a little cushioning in my life ;)
I had a feeling the bars would draw attention but to me they've been on so long (22 years) they look original! I might see...
Thanks Dare, for compliments and comments! What's FD and RD?
I might try a wider, straighter set of bars, but the risers are good as I have slightly dodgy wrists, hence the experiment with the Rock Shox. Initial test down my favourite hill tonight was promising and a lot less impact up my arms...
My 1994 GT TIMBERLINE which I bought new way back in late '93. I've just finished a full rebuild/restoration this week! Loads of pics and the full story on this thread.
And because I really wanted the "FS" model which had suspension forks but couldn't afford it I finally "retro upgraded"...
And here she is sitting pretty in the sunshine right before...
...I overhauled and fitted the ROCK SHOX QUARDA 21Rs!!!
Time for a test ride, me thinks... I've never ridden a mountain bike with suspension before!
ROCK SHOX QUADRA 21Rs I picked up on eBay. Grubby but rock solid with no play. Elastomers still dripping with grease, these were looked after. I always wanted shocks but back in 1993 they nearly doubled the price of the TIMBERLINE if you wanted the TIMBERLINE FS model and I was a "poor" student...
New sealed bottom bracket installed. Following the instructions carefully this was screwed in from the opposite side to the original.
Water bottle bolts polished.
Nice little find on eBay - a Shimano chain stay sticker.
And eBay bargain, brand new modern GT saddle!
Top of the Brand-X...
Dissolving the aluminium seat post in strong caustic soda solution. Yes, that's steam of frothing aluminium!
Frame flushed internally with lots of water and left to dry after old stuck seatpost is finally gone!
Frame keyed with 1,500 grit wet and dry paper.
Frame after spraying with 1K...
Rear wheel rebuilt.
Getting there...
Crankshaft and chainset disassembled.
An hour later after some action with AUTOSOL metal polish.
Old bottom bracket. Was working ok but rubber seals had perished. Time for a new one.
The seatpost SNAPS when I try to twist it out with a large Stilson...
As I got further in it was obvious I was going to need some specialist bike tools.
Rebuilding front wheel bearings with new ball bearings and much white lithium grease.
Bearing reassembled and quicklock polished.
Front wheel fully restored.
The old spoke guard just crumbled when I pulled...
Today after six months of work I finally finished overhauling my beloved 1994 spec GT TIMBERLINE. I ended up doing so much it turned into a restoration project.
I bought the bike back in late 1993 from Rayment Cycles in Brighton with my student loan! It's been used regularly ever since but...
Re:
Keeping it pretty original! I ditched the original one-piece cow-horn handlebars not long after I got it 23 years ago after a little accident where they got wrapped around a small tree (!), but almost everything else is as it was. I managed to source a NOS Shimano HYPERGLIDE-C 7-speed...
