Quick addendum - are there levels of stiffness for these elastomer slugs? Here they have the option for firm and medium.. Can anyone shed some light? I can start a new thread if it would help.

Thanks RockiMtn! I have yet to contact my lbs with suspension questions. I will likely replace them however because I want a set with lockouts - these don't have that. And while I do mostly ride the road, I'd like to start XC'ing and getting a fresh pair of suspension forks that will meet...

You might be right-on there. I haven't looked it over in detail but I'll check the screws. Makes sense if the shifter is topped out but the derailleur isn't. That's what I was basing my thoughts on as well but I think the Fusion was also available in 91 and 92 [its not referenced on that...
