Pre-WW2 BSA, something of a diamond in the rough I believe

1936 catalogue: https://oldbike.wordpress.com/1936-bsa-catalogue/ I was going to say this looks like the latest catalogue where the bikes still had head clip headsets, but actually if you look carefully some do have them in the 1938 catalogue. 1936 Gold Medal has a 531 frame with the high...

    BSA Opperman Special ID help

You probably saw me mention in the other thread that by the 1938 catalogue BSAs didn’t have a head clip headset. So we can say yours pre-dates that (edit: I was wrong about this. The Opperman forks had head clips in the 1938 catalogue if you look closely) 1936 or 1938 Opperman Special with...

Pre-WW2 BSA, something of a diamond in the rough I believe

A couple of years ago I had what I’d narrowed down to a 1938 BSA Sports. Almost everything matched the brochure except a couple of small details. For a long time I wasn’t convinced it was a BSA but a lot of things were the same and it had remnants of BSA box lining. They can be extremely...

Shimano Tiagra 4700 rear mech specification question

It’s not usually the small end it struggles with, it’s usually the big end because it struggles to clear the big cog. It’ll be fine with any cassette down to an 11T at the small end. So either 12-30 or 14-30 will be fine 👍

Pre-WW2 BSA, something of a diamond in the rough I believe

Link to the 1938 BSA catalogue if you haven’t seen it: https://oldbike.wordpress.com/1938-bsa-catalogue/ You’re right that yours is earlier than this. The head clip headset is the giveaway, as by 1938 they had threaded headsets. However, that catalogue has all the models. Good spot with the...

    Handle bar stem problems

Could be someone over-tightened the stem bolt and bulged the steerer tube. Glad you got it out 👍

    Rear derailleur mounting

Is it that other stop notch what some of the Huret Jubilee mechs were supposed to use too? Mine has it in the usual position but some of them had it further round.

    Rear derailleur mounting

Ah ok, makes more sense now with the pics and additional input from everyone. It looks like you’d be fine filing the side of that portacatena mount flush to clear the bolt head. Another option would be, if you want to keep the frame original/untouched you could get a washer and file a notch into...

    Rear derailleur mounting

Doesn’t sound right, but without a pic it’s hard to say.

    It's pronounced "Fah-jean"...

I’ve got some kit that smells like that too.

Vitus 979 - replacing internally routed rear brake cable

Those cable entry tubes are about 0.75” long and have a step at the end of them so the cable can’t be pushed in any further. Kalloy UNO seatpost comes in 25mm if you want a more budget option than Campag 👍

Vitus 979 - replacing internally routed rear brake cable

You don’t use a liner on that internal tube. The ends are stepped and (from memory) you should be able to use a well-cut cable without ferrules. It looks like the plastic on your cable outer has got rucked up, that’s probably why it’s tight. I can’t remember if it’s better to strip back a bit of...

Aero Garbage Wind Resistant a lie

19 pages now. Came in here to see what/why everyone was still arguing about. Randomly saw your post. Quoted it and left again.

Pinarello Treviso - sacrilege or not?

You’ll get more for it if you sell it separately and obviously you won’t have the postage worries of a whole bike. Personally, for a bike I’m not going to ride, I wouldn’t go to all the effort of a build just to sell it.
