Rockhopper FS 1999 build in progress

I'm building up a Rockhopper from 1999 for my son. Its Ritchey steel, which can't be bad. A 17 inch, 55cm top tube. Hope its not too big, otherwise I will have to ride it! XT 750 waiting to be added, plus a WTB Silverado saddle, LX hubs and 221 rims. Some blue DMR Vault flat pedals, and brakes...

For Sale 97/98 Orange Clockwork Frame, 19", F7 & Pace Forks etc... PRICE DROP

Not that I need a bike, but looking at these, and thinking "they are as big as a gate", how big are these....Orange head tubes were always relatively short, so I guess these are something like 21 inch frames?

How did you do that with the fork steerer....is that a fork for a bigger frame, which is just chopped down? And the stem looks like it clamped directly onto the steerer? Very nice.

Comparing 1x vs. 2x by the numbers.

Sturmey Archer for the win. 1x3. Once you have ridden a fixed gear, you realise you can comfortably ride with a cadence anywhere between 60 and 120.

Length of seatpost shim: is 6cm too short

Too late for the USE shim, I've ordered a Cane Creek! Thermoplastic would prevent stuck posts, which is an additional win for the USE shim.

Length of seatpost shim: is 6cm too short

Ha, overlapping posts, I edited mine above as I bought the shim from BikeInn just now. Makes sense now, regarding the fatigue characteristics of aluminium vs steel. I will keep an eye out for a 30.4mm Thomson. This is going to be a well dressed Rockhopper. I've bought some matching coloured Z3's...

Length of seatpost shim: is 6cm too short

I kind of suspected this, I've ordered a 30.4mm Cane Creek shim from BikeInn. The frame is steel, but its pretty light for a basic mountain bike frame at 2.2kg. Its the last of the steel frames Specialized made I think, double butted Ritchey Logic...seems similar to the Rocky Mountain Hammer...

Length of seatpost shim: is 6cm too short

I'm building up a retro Specialized Rockhopper FS for my son, and the original seatpost was a 30.4mm boat anchor. So I bought a seatpost shim off Ebay, a Truvativ Husselfelt. I'm concerned that its only 6cm long. However, its nicely machined, and being from Truvativ, I'm guessing its been...
