Re: Thanks for the advice, ill look into it. Well I've made a bit of a rookie mistake, I sprayed wd40 on the screws, hub etc. And the cassette to clean it for the photos. I must have washed out any remaining crease from the bearings. Servicing the hub's I'd now number one priority. Can anyone...

Re: I do have a few tools, link extractor, hub spanners. No BB tools, but a whip chain and cog tool are cheap on the bay, I just need to know what tool to buy. Found this picture of the hubs, does this help identify tool and freewheel / cassette? http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx? ...

Re: The ride home from work was great, the brakes really inspire confidence. Took off the rear wheel and took some photos. The hub feels a bit gritty, the bottom bracket a little play. I'm thinking is should order some new balls from simply bearings, what size do i need for the hub's and crank...

Re: The 5700,s are fitted and working beautifully. Huge improvement in stopping power and feel, thanks for the excellent advice! The spa bolt was essential for the front callipers as the standard bolt was too short. No drilling required, just used the old washers and nuts. Jagwire cable kit...

Re: Re: The bolt has arrived, very quick delivery from SPA cycles. Please let me know what you think ASAP, I have found some 5700's for sale. Should I cancel the 5800's in favour of the 5700's or forget fitting modern calipers altogether? Cheers, Ian

Does this mean the 5800 calipers will not work at all with my levers, should I cancel the order? Cheers Ian

OK, I am listening ;) Just to confirm. If I order two front 5800's calipers, I only need one conversion bolt for the forks? May as well if it makes you all happy. :) Cheers Ian

You guys rock! I'm going to order two front 5800's and fit them at the same time as the cables. I have a pillar drill, so the front forks should be ok. It was the rear that was troubling..... Photos to come. Cheers Ian

I think Retro Guru meant if I buy two front calipers I wouldn't need to drill, is that correct? If I cut the cables and outer to fit my current brakes they may be wrong for the 5800's, I'm not sure? Cheers Ian

Re: Thanks, I Have been eyeing up how to drill the rear brake bridge and can't see how without buying a right angle chuck. Evans sell the 5800 individually, cant buy the 5700, will they work with my levers? I'll just buy two front callipers then if it means no drilling. Cheers Ian

I have been reading http://sheldonbrown.com/calipers.html, Its recommended to buy two front calipers due to the longer centre bolts, I cant see the 5800 bolt length specs listed anywhere? Current centre bolt length. front 8 cm, rear 6.5 cm, total length including nut. Do I understand correctly...

Thanks for the info.. The wheels are Wolber super champion gentleman 81, look like Alu to me. Thinking about the cost difference between kool stop and changing the brakes to Shimano 105, for £50 they come with pads. It looks as though the 5700 has been replaced by the 5800? They have the same...
