    Lightest Steel Frame?

I love this thread. Honest steel bike *frame* weights are hard to come by. With paint my large cielo road racer disc is 1795g. One of the stiffest bikes I've ever ridden. Columbus Life.

BoTM BoTM August 2024 - USA Special. Time to vote

I almost feel like I should go research and choose based on who hasn’t won before. But I didn’t, I still voted with my heart. My choice surprised me but it is what it is. What a month!

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

This is starting to sound to me like you guys don't have any idea what you're talking about. Have you ridden modern hydraulic road discs? Around here our mtb trails are wet roots and mud, there's no traction and yet we must brake to keep the speed down. There is way more grip on the road on a...

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

I accept that rim brakes need more skill day to day but fundamentally they require too much hand force to stop in the steeps when its wet. Its not about how its that the hand force needed is too high. With discs its finger force always. Disc brake maintenance? Literally no maintenance on my...

    Which grease for wheel bearings?

So here i am mouthing off in a grease thread. Guys moly is for sliding friction. In wheel bearings it can make the balls slide and flatspot. Its for suspension bushings, ball joints, etc. So many great greases made for ball bearings, use any of them. The ancient Phil grease works fine but so...

    10sp ultegra di2 help

Does this stuff just completely suck?? How many bikes we have had where rear derailleur and shifters last for decades. Ive cool friends with electronic shifting on mtb and it seems like its been durable. I wont accept the prices but the stuff does work well for them. Why again would someone...

Cantilever brake suggestions for a '94 bike

I just dont understand. Ive used so many ‘good’ cantis: mafac, 986, 987, 737, m900, suntour, judder is when pads are setup wrong. Are your rims clean and smooth? Pads are not melty? Are your canti posts undersized? Maybe take them somewhere and have a shop do the setup. The whole situation is...

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

So i just dont understand some of your experiences wrt rim brakes. It might be because im unique in riding in the gritty wet, but what some of you rim advocates are sharing seems ‘fantastic.’ On my winter mtb the shimano metal pads last me more than 100k feet of descending. The organic pads...

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

Yes I totally agree that folks are often 'overbiked'. I saw the same thing in Moab where there were entire families of novice mtb riders, on green trails, were on new 5k+ carbon santa cruz hightowers. Moms in tennis shoes following their kids. Why didn't they get the megatower? Simplest...

    Sad looking Ti Raleigh

Well... I've got a contrary opinion based on having ridden one. These did not ride well they were terrible soft spongey things. But it looks weird and is ti so... as a ride around to the store cruiser its a pretty nifty bike!

New bike - would you choose disc or rim brake ?

Doesn’t it seem reasonable that folks that enjoy rim brakes should keep using them? For thems the obsolescence must be frustrating. I commuted so many years in my hilly rainy city and braking was always fraught. For me it’s a genuine relief that I only need to manage the tire traction now, and...

What to do when a bike looks like this.

If you just want it stable until it finds a new owner: 1) store it in warm dry place 2) spray/wipe it down with wd40 or fluidfilm or kroil, some light oil. The oil barrier isnt durable but will impede rusting. Inside the frame too!

What to do when a bike looks like this.

Right, I see the majority of the project's time will go to doing the paint. The rust would be gone in an hour with a media cabinet - no time at all compared to masking, sourcing paint, practicing, vacuuming, etc. It just doesn't make sense to paint without getting the rust out. Nice or not I...

What to do when a bike looks like this.

The naive part is thinking the converter or miracle chemical is going to make the problem go away. The rust is still there and is still hungry, and now you can't see the surface so the problem is hidden. The only case where a rust converter has 'worked' for me was using POR15 on rusty 3/16"...

What to do when a bike looks like this.

Yeee… rust converters are for the naive. In my experience they never quite work. They dont work even a little bit. Frustrating as it sounds youve got to get the rust out 100%. A bike frame will fit in a blasting cabinet, mask all the good areas and then go at it with glass bead and take all...
