the mystery thickens... The Geometry is consistent with the 38/39 frame, but the head lugs are consistent with the slightly earlier Saxons. 26" wheels are more likely to be pre war... The frame number is NOT consistent with the 38/39 Saxons, nor is it consistent with Claud Butler numbering...

not really just ACs, but as you probably gathered from earlier posts, got Saxons and CBs. (I like the very original 1930s Saxon on ebay at moment but will not be tempted!) on the frame... Only thing have found really works is Jeweller grade emery cloth and gentle elbow grease. Happy days! Chris

Can anybody help me date my Claud Butler frame? What I do know is that it has Axe Bi-laminate 'lugs' and that these lugs were generally used on the Avant Coureur from 1947 to 1951 and on the New All Rounder from 1952 to 1956.The Frame has Simplex drop-outs and not the fluted top to the seat...

Interesting. I was aware from a potted history of Hill Specials that the saxon name and twin tube design may have passed through Adam Hill's ownership in the late 1950s. The history on this website is more definitive and sounds very credibile. Would love to see a picture of a twin tube Hill...

lets try a different avenue of investigation... This frame number has 6 digits. Saxon numbers up to 1939 had 5 digits latterly starting with an 8 or 9. Claud Butler frames have a 6 digit number. The "Saxon TT" was introduced in the Claud Butler catalogue from 1953 and was still in the catalogue...
