Believe it or not, there are actually two Butterworth’s bike shops in Sheffield. And they are unrelated. One on the south of the city that I use, and another in Hillsborough I think, on the north side of town.*
*this may be a local urban myth. I’ve never actually been to the latter one. Though...
Update:
I left the bike last week with the wheel clamped in. Just got to my lockup now and took out the rear wheel. Measured between the dropouts and it’s now coming up as about 135mm. Which is definitely narrower than it was last time I measured it!
Thanks to a previous poster for the handy...
I just don't understand how it's gone out. I would have remembered using so muscvh force to clamp them together when I rebuilt it I'm sure. If the frame-builder has stretched them out with a wrong jig or something, surely the stays and dropouts would be bent. And I can't imagine why he'd even do...
I'm pretty sure it was about 145mm. The wheel/hub was just floating in space when I offered it up. Had to put one side in then use briute force to clamp the dropouts together.
I'll measure things properly tomorrow. Where do I need to make the measurements of the axle?

Thanks for the replies guys.
I'm away from the bike now so can't measure. I did measure the width though when I got it back from the frame-builder and it was about 140mm - 150mm from memory.
Hello everyone.
Just joined to get some specific advice but I'll hopefully stick around as I love my old bikes.
Bit of a long read so bear with me. So, I have an old Carlton Pro AM road bike. I've had it about four years. I was working on an old fella's house and I was admiring the bike in his...
