Well, middle range 70s and 80s french road bikes may not be rare or collectible, but are quality bikes, somewhat plentiful (good for spares) and ride quite well indeed if you can get used to drop bars... no need to break the bank.

Padded gloves do help also :wink: You may also try flat bars, I have a typical MTB bar/stem combo on my modernish road bike. My tyres are Panaracer Race D evo 3 in 25mm, (more cushy than 23mm, still feel quite fast). I remember paying around 35eur per tyre; good tyres and tubes cost a little...

I've got (dark) tan walls panaracers that I like. For the bars, I had some old standard alloy dropbars chopped off and mounted upside down, quite comfy and I can use period correct brake levers (looks much better IRL than in this picture).

Makes sense! Some kind of eccentric wedge...

I recently bought those on eBay: In fact, I got burnt: they were advertised as NOS, but I did not double check and of course, they are not : they are missing all their mounting hardware! Partly my fault because I should have been more careful with the pictures; NOS = complete and usable...
