    Today's ROAD ride

Here's a pic of Eaglesham Moor with Glasgow and East Kilbride in the distance. I discovered this road on Thursday (which is when I took this pic), and rode it again today. I ride up the Ayr Road from the Eastwood Toll, turn left onto this road to Eaglesham, then left again in Eaglesham back to...

Chain for Raleigh Winner '10 speed racer'

Thanks for all the advice. I finally got round to ordering the parts today. That's what I ended up going for. I recall Shimano gears as something to aspire to having from when I was a teenager. In the end, I just bought a 6 speed 14-28T Shimano freewheel and compatible chain when I spotted an...

Chain for Raleigh Winner '10 speed racer'

There is 123.4 mm clearance (measured with rear wheel removed). The old 5 speed freewheel seems to have quite a large spacer as it is. I imagine I could probably "persuade" the 123.4mm clearance to be another couple of mm wider if necessary, and would hope a slightly wider freewheel might fit...

Chain for Raleigh Winner '10 speed racer'

Please excuse my ignorance. I have only just learned what the difference is, and have not argued that it is academic or pedantry. I bought it new on 1/3/16.

Chain for Raleigh Winner '10 speed racer'

Ok, I'm convinced. This is the item I bought with what would be an "economy class" freewheel: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/27x1-1-4-MULT ... 6vfB0NOqCA The freewheel that's on it is 14 -28. I would like a smaller sprocket for the highest gear, and found this...

Chain for Raleigh Winner '10 speed racer'

How about a modern cassette and an old chain? I bought the cassette along with the wheels at the beginning of last month. I had a problem with the chain skipping in fourth (and sometimes ninth) gear when I pedalled hard, which I presumed was down to the (probably original) chain, rather than...

    Today's ROAD ride

Thanks to my ride last Saturday, I've found that I enjoy riding up and down hills on quiet country roads more than I enjoy riding along flat cycle paths. Here's a pic of my new playground, Fenwick Moor, from yesterday:

    Today's ROAD ride

Thanks. It was one of my best rides ever, despite the fact that it rained for most of the return leg (and as you can see the bike has no mudguards). I'm 6 feet tall. I had another bottle in my rucksack.

    Today's ROAD ride

Since I recently started riding my Raleigh Winner I've been finding that the flat 20 - 40 mile circuits I usually ride on my MTB aren't challenging enough, so I went on what turned out to be a hilly 94 mile ride on Saturday. Starting off in Glasgow, I rode up to Fenwick Moor, missing a sign...

Chain for Raleigh Winner '10 speed racer'

Thanks for the responses and the links. I'll get something ordered up soon and report back when I've fitted it.

Chain for Raleigh Winner '10 speed racer'

Hi, I want to replace the chain on my Raleigh Winner. The issue is the plethora of available bicycle chains, and the fact that I've never bought one before - I have replaced motorcycle chains before though so reckon I can handle fitting a bicycle chain no problem. The bike has traditional...

    Raleigh Winner

This had been left out for the garbage collectors. Bought new wheels and tyres as the old wheels were rather rusty and the tyres were ancient, and replaced a few other parts with used parts at my local Bike Station. It only goes out in dry weather, and I ride it regularly. I plan on keeping it...
