Can Alu frames ever feel like Steel frames?

Failure isnt the issue for me with Alu - I am a light rider and have only broken two frames in my life - it’s the terrible ride characteristics. getting beaten up by your bike is the tail wagging the dog. It’s not so bad off-road - but on the road it’s just horrible given the time in the saddle...

2025 DH World Cup Mt StAnne Winning Run

It’s the part where you get to a minute or so in to the run and only then does he start breathing hard…really?

just received this from Chris King and it made me feel very old and slow…I am thinking new hubs will not make up the difference.

Revelations about the past of Mauro Gianetti, Pogacar’s Manager (Radio France Investigation, Translation in post)

You are right. I should have said - no one on the inside with the evidence and ability to stop it - which was a lot of people - did anything. It went on for the best part of a decade.

Revelations about the past of Mauro Gianetti, Pogacar’s Manager (Radio France Investigation, Translation in post)

Is it though? Not saying this is happening now - but it is exactly what happened in the past. I am not looking for an argument, but the Armstrong era had lots of doping, lots knew about it. no one said anything…

Revelations about the past of Mauro Gianetti, Pogacar’s Manager (Radio France Investigation, Translation in post)

I feel really stupid for saying this, but I had assumed Pog was just superhuman - a Merckx of his generation. But now I think about it, his career trajectory has been a little odd and he doesn’t have the normal climbers build which should have set alarm bells ringing. To be a great all- rounder...

Revelations about the past of Mauro Gianetti, Pogacar’s Manager (Radio France Investigation, Translation in post)

Yes - a junior in one of the WC rounds IIRC. Really ugly process vs the nod and a wink telling off and short ban if she had been knee deep in EPO and amphetamines.

The mother of legends: MS Racing Pro Comp XT

That bike takes me back. I know Mike Kloser was the bigger star but Mike Kluge is who I always associate with this bike as the World XC Championship winner - well before the UCI got their hands on the sport.

here's Lance Armstrong today. He's retro isn't he

I keep my copy next to Tyler’s book and David Millar’s.

The public fallout with Greg LeMond was also horrible. The whole thing became really personal. I understand it really hurt LeMond financially as Trek took sides. Doesn’t Lance own a stake in SRAM from their early days too?

here's Lance Armstrong today. He's retro isn't he

I like to think a couple of them didn’t. Andy Hampsten was the TdF white jersey winner back in the mid 80s but it never really happened for him after (OK - he won, but not to the level of his early promise) because he was never willing to dope in the EPO fueled peloton. I think I read somewhere...

here's Lance Armstrong today. He's retro isn't he

He was a great rider. World Champ pre-TdF focus. The boy wasn’t without talent.

here's Lance Armstrong today. He's retro isn't he

lance had a massive VO2 Max - one of the highest ever measured. If you increase his O2 absorption ability through EPO or blood replacement he will gain a disproportionate benefit vs someone that has lower O2 processing capacity. I know this is also true of training response etc - but it’s not...

Can Alu frames ever feel like Steel frames?

The idea that shape and other engineered characteristics can change the fundamental nature of a material feels a little misguided? I always thought you can build in engineered changes to frame characteristics that way, but there is a limit beyond which you can’t go defined by the material...
