A lot of long time riders find 1x lacks top end, but if you don't mind that, it offers many advantages.

Should have discs though - why not?

Nice bike made for purpose. Crust make quality stuff and the Ritchey breakaways have been around for ages.

I'll ask Jo what his minivelo gear and cass. range is - he swears its all you need!
Although he's often offroad, he rode up to hay with us 100km tarmac last year.

My rule of thumb is the frame is 1/3 of the build price...
This provides a realistic allowance to steer you clear of both CK and Formula hubs

I've seen Microshift Acolyte 8sp, Advent 9sp and Shimano Zee 10sp recommended for 20" wheels.. albeit, i often see fancy vintage Dura-Ace short cage on old 16" wheel Panasonic Traincle.

If you're 1x, 8 and 9 speed steps are too large for comfort if touring.
10 is your minimum, and you need to avoid road, it won't handle an adequate rear sprocket.
Unless you live in Holland or east anglia obvs.
