A Very Poorly But Cheap Yeti FRO

I don't understand this how much would the frame be worth fully done your paying £700 for frame £200 to get it fixed £300 to get it sprayed that's £1200

Pretty good deal. Especially if you are able to extract the seat post yourself, do a little welding job to repair the cut, reproduce a new side for the hub and have it anodized again.

Then, sell the hubset, the hyperlite bars, the serviced fork and the headset.

Nice project for a totally ok price in the end!

Superb work, as always, Dan

Exceptional work as always.

Absolutely first class 👍

If this was picked up by someone who can do it all themselves, or has a mate who will for some beers then it makes for a good deal. It is good to see the money is still out there to be spent on rare and interesting bike stuff, too.

You say reproduce a side for hub how do the hubs come apart cheers and what's a f ame like that worth then

Yes that is correct, I was referring to someone who can extract the seat post parts himself, do the small tig welding job himself (or with a buddy of thin wall oldtimer restorations), give it a little rattle can paint repair and a polish - and then sell the parts he doesnt need afterwards.

The fork (especially if you have a new set of elastomers already), the handle bar, the headset and the bottom bracket will give you back a nice percentage of the winning bid. Taking apart the Hope hubs is literally super easy - especially if youre into retro MTB tinkering for 35 years. You most likely have done it plenty of times on various manufacturers. Its a simple "vintage type" freewheel hub (threaded).

In my (machinery) source for example, I pay about 40 Euros for a drive side of a hub and an anodization is fairly cheap too, if you have buddies working in that field. When they are done, the 2 hubs alone are about 150,00 Euros. Plus 100 for the bars, plus 220 for the serviced forks, plus about 45 for the headset.

In the end, the number on the project frame is about 350 Euros - which is fantastic. You have to set it in perspective to general availability of a 1993 FRO frame with Atac stem including noodle. How often does it pop - and what is the general asking price for it? Even if its repaired.

Especially in the YETI community, repaired or damaged frames are literally staple.

One last thing: I generally wanted to say that I am pretty surprised that this auction didnt go way higher! I guess most people shyed away from that very (short) list of things to be done to the frame.

Repairable, though.

I spliced a whole new top section into an Ultimate many years ago:

Lumpy tube from bad reaming and a crack repair:

Replace with this fresh tube:

Cut out seat tube and file back joints to the original mitre surfaces:

Machine a 2-way plug to join the original seat tube and the replacement section:

Dry run fit:

Weld it all up and file the joint back to the original surface to hide it:

All the best,
That's almost unbelievable work.
