Stars Stripes Kilauea

I think he’s referring to the apparent lack of obvious threading in the shell. Looks like the threading wasn’t masked off

Frame arrived, it has bb threads but they weren't properly masked off so will need to be chased.
It's an 18'', which was the only thing I was worried about. Paint job is gorgeous and the poorly masked star is barely perceptible in the flesh.

Unfortunately it received damage during transit. A nasty chip to the top tube. It looks like the exposed fork steerer impacted it. A real shame because other than that it's pristine. The seller did a reasonable job packing it, but at some point it's received very aggressive handling. So disappointing when loose items aren't secured, but are instead left free to clatter about, it's so easy to prevent these kinds of issues.

Not the end of the world, it should be easy enough to touch in. Overall I'm pleased with it and excited to get it built and ridden.

Serial number is very hard to read as the paint is so thick, but to my eyes it looks like H8C3 8154. Can anyone help with confirming model and year from that?

Glad the paint looks good (other than the annoying damage), does that mean you are more likely to keep the paint as-is?

Model can't really be confirmed from the S/N but whatever it is was made around Feb '98, so the '98 model year.

What a shame tsundere looks like you got a really good buy there apart from the idiots moving it hope you keep as is and build it then find a worse frame and do your original paint job keep an eye out for your build thread

Hodaka, 1998 and I think, 3 March or 8 August. Most likely the latter given August 1998 would be correct for the timeline.

Yes, the paint is staying, will need to find a good colour match for touching in that chip though.

Thank you both for confirming the year! If it's absolutely a 98 then that would confirm it as a Kilauea (or better) due to cable stop locations etc discussed earlier in the thread. So a 98 Kilauea it is :)

A shame it has the cromoly and 853 decals under the clearcoat, the former will be hidden behind a bottle cage, I might apply a 631 decal over the 853 if it covers it completely, just because it feels like a lie.

Anyone have any ideas about the kind of red I'm looking for? It's a very deep blood red, almost burgundy, with what looks like a slight candy or pearlescent effect.

I assume it’s the the same red as the normal stars& bars scheme?

Who did the paint?
Unknown, but given the incorrect tube set decals definitely not Kona.
Could be any frame painter, except Mercian or Argos who would have masked that bb shell properly and chased the threads.

I'm going to get a few likely testers and try to narrow it down.
