You're not alone. Modern drop bars are much nicer to ride, less reach and drop. Also better hand room. That's why I bought the stems I linked to.

I have a pair of 460mm flared to 520mm drops on order, much shorter reach too, I have used them before and really like them, I will fit a stem riser/converter for now but almost certainly I will get one of those stems you linked, thanks

I've a slightly flared set of Boardman bars on my Carrera CX bike. I find them comfortable too. I've got a couple of stem converters I keep just because they're useful for setting up a riding position.

As an aside I picked up a Carrera crossfire from the dump Its a hybrid with rim V brakes, a triple and it looked too good to be scrapped, like you I have a vast supply of parts and so new front sus with a lockout, and sorry but I couldnt resist a YOSE power conversion, 700x40c schwalbe land cruiser tyres and Tannus armour, it had a rear carrier and big mudguards and has made a cracking E-bike for about 350 quid. I am surprised how good that frame is, very strong, it will be used in the winter and for load lugging, I almost never use a car now, so it will be useful

I'm a huge Carrera fan and I'm familiar with the model you saved. I've never seriously considered an e bike but my son is keen. I think with Carrera you get a lot of bike for the money. I've 4 now I've that I've said that @bikeworkshop will be along to berate me shortly

I am too, many years ago when I was broke, living on the edge of Dartmoor and at my physical peak, I used a Carrera Crossfire for years, half on/ half off road, loads of off road trails I really gave it some stick on dartmoor I hammered that bike for years and it never complained, even the original wheels stayed true, I also rode it regularly with the YOGI cycling club on clubruns while everybody else was on fancypants road bikes with 23c tyres. I eventually gave it away when I moved house but always remembered how great it was and pleased to say this one is just as good. They unfortunately fit discs on most now (market demand) but there are still a couple with rim brakes and what a bargain they are, they dont come with carriers and mudguards anymore but still a great sturdy capable bike for the money

Disc brakes are the spawn of satan IMO. I've had three bikes with discs, all sold very quickly. Nice bikes spoiled by the brakes. Toms gonna wind it into me now

Totally agree, I had one bike with hydro discs, just couldnt see any advantages at all, and V brakes cost almost nothing to buy too, the Discs didnt work any better, cantis look great too
