I was casually perusing the facebook group cycloshite when I came across a link to an ebay listing from Sussex Police.

9 x Mixed Mountain / Hybrid Bikes Most 2000's Era Poor Condition For Repair.

Genuine Sussex Police Auction

9 x Mixed Bikes

For collection from John St Police Stn, Brighton

We are open for pick up weekdays 9 - 4

Used Condition

All at least ten years old

These were all force fleet bikes that have been removed from service

Some of these have been in storage unused for several years so have thick dirt all over and patches of rust

They will probably all require a proper strip down and refurbishment or
just be used for the parts

Some of the frames are heavily scratched where the force decals have been scraped off

lovely picture innit

I'm a bit of a nerd and am always on the lookout for badly listed gems, this was one of them. I drove from Norfolk to Brighton to collect them cost £60 in diesel. Why oh Why you may well ask. Well if you had looked closer at the shoddy pics you might have seen the pearls amongst the swine.

That rear shifter box and hint of yellow was all I needed to fully commit. In all I counted two of these, and set my sights on them as I've been dreaming of a disc Rohloff build for years, but couldn't really afford one. Needless to say my top snipe of £343.99 ensured they were coming home with me. Plus £60 in diesel and a bloody parking ticket to boot. Win some lose some in the words of St Lemmy of Kilminster. My thoughts were If I could sell one for £450 then I'.ve just got myself a free Rohloff disc hub.

5am start with a stopover on the way, I arrive at about 10am. The lovely young lady at the police station starts wheeling out my wins and yes they're Rohloff's. First one and I'm stoked, second one and I'm ecstatic, third one comes as a huge surprise and nearly floors me. 3 Rohloffs for £450. The price should come down once I part out the bikes as it's those high precision german babes that I really want.

Three Rohloff disc hubs now safely in the shed for peanuts........ what a glorious day

Woah… great score, that’s some detective work (no pun intended). If you want to move one on, I’m all ears! Fancy transferring my Big Dummy kid-hauler to Rohloff, but like you can’t really justify a new hub.

One definitely needs to go, I'm all ears if your interested

Now that's a score, wow!!
If I see that right they have the external shift box and are suitable for all kinds of frame, right?
Do they also come with the newer shifters? Makes replacing the grip rubber much easier as the older ones are hard to find.
Screams for a tourer and a low maintenance mtb...
Nice On One 456 maybe?
