2008 Giant Halfway (folding bike)

Your wish is my command Tom,

I spent the day in work researching these rather than doing my job (as you do)
Admittedly Im rather confused as they look slightly similar to Rollercam brakes but also totally at the same time, different some guy in Germany was selling them and he called them u-brakes but again they looked nothing like the other u-brakes I saw.

I dont care, they stop the bike well enough and look cool because they are as different as the whole bike is.
Other than taking these pics I took the opportunity to put a 3rd coat on the stand and I'll post pics of those eventually.

Rear set exactly the same

To be fair they could do with a little bit of love and attention, with the nuts & bolts needing to be wire brushed and maybe painted for protection.

This is also on the frame does anyone know anything about it, clearly security markings somewhere but is coming off when I do the rest of the protection films cos it looks out of place.

Technically it's not rollercam, because it doesn't have a cam and rollers.

The geometry of operation is similar though.

It's not a u brake, as that is levered with a straddle pulling the crossed arms together

I did a thread on "delta-brakes" using the term to refer to the overall shape rather than operation...

This includes some similar designs, but yours would be a welcome inclusion - takethe opportunity to tell us what you gogled during a "busy day" at work😉

The holographic sticker is for SmartWater I think, a paint- on product with a unique molecular identity - hard to remove, but requiring special test equipment.

Thanks Tom, I'll tear them down tomorrow after work and get some extra pics up on that thread for you

Yesterday I finished early and got stuck into the bike because it was lovely out there for a change in Scotlands own Raintown...

First order of the day was to fit the newly painted stand and then resume removing the old and worn protection films

I also removed the cranks and was shocked to see that they were Suntour took the pedals off and one of them is junk as the rollers are noisy and crunchy perhaps mr jetwash was introduced a little to enthusiasticly to it at one point sadly they are sealed so new VP-F57 folding pedals are on their way.

Next was another look at those brakes, I still have no idea how Im going to strip them down into component parts but first I wanted to get the shoes off only to find out that they are the original 17 year old ones so new shoes have been ordered on general principle.

Once that was done, I finished peeling off the protection films and started dealing with the aesthetics that annoyed me.
I pulled off the flaky Giant emblem from head tube I was utterly gobsmacked one again to find that it is recessed is recessed just like the model; name on the frame, Ive still to peel off the remainder of the sticky foam at this point.

The badge was a real mess as the chrome had failed almost everywhere so some 320 then 600 grits were employed and later it went into the shed to be primed and painted.

The last thing I did yesterday was to deal with the rear rack mounting arm.
Those fingerprints and general grubbiness would not come off, I tried thinners and even paint stripper and it made no difference so I suspect it was there when it was passivated.
So it also had a 320 / 600 going over before going into the shed to be primed and painted.

Once that was done I couldnt resist this shot of the bike looking lovely and clean in the evening sun

And as per usual for me, I get this far into it and I think well I might as well just...
Im going to replace the brake and gear cables, remove the brake calipers and (hopefully) strip, clean and grease them as required.
The wheels and mudguards are also coming off so that I can get the last tiny bits of the protection film removed then get the whole frame degreased and treated to a good soapy scrub before I apply new protection film.
Then Im going to buff the seat tube and maybe the handlebar stem if it needs it.

Lastly its confession of a panicked noob...
After seeing the state of the brake shoes I noticed a groove in the wheel and I immediately thought they were junk because I could get my nail in it and it felt like 1mm deep and wide.
So I asked my very patient and always helpful friends in the Bikewrenchers Inn, who informed me it was just a wear indicator groove and nothing to worry about.
No pisstake no fuxakes what a noob, no insults or snobbery just great people in a good forum who want to help each other - amazing not many forums like this on the web thats for sure and Im very grateful for their friendship.

Now thats a damn good thought, thanks Bob
or paint the recess, let dry then use 3000 grit to remove the paint from the surrounding area and polish the original paint back to normal.

not Suntour cranks, SR Suntour. they aren't crap manufacturers as such, they have a lot of reasonably nice mid range stuff (I like their top end forks). They do alot of OEM and low end stuff too though, like the XCM, XCT forks and those cranks you have there. It's dependable and OK, it isn't going to bend in half when you look at it, but it isn't great either. Case in point is the riveted chain ring.
