Dawes Emblem

Retro Newbie
I picked up this Dawes Emblem last night from someone and really don't know anything about this age of bike. I have tried searching but can not find any reference to this model or really any of the older Dawes makes, I have found a reference to the saddle ! and this has a date of around 1962 -63. This bike is very light I would guess around 22 - 24 lbs going by my other bikes.

Any ideas, the bike is very light the owner had owned it from new but couldn't remember the date only roughly. As you can see it hasn't been touched in a long time and I don't intend to start now until I can find out some info on it.

Here are a few pictures and a link to some more

That's nice.

The rear derailleur is a Cyclo Benelux Mk7:

The headset looks like a Brampton - another Birmingham company. My Brampton headset has a date stamp on one of the internal faces - 1953 in that particular case.

I'd say circa 1960 would be about right, give or take a year or two. The script logo and coloured enamel "D" badge were in use then:

and the parts all fit.

By 1964 the head badge style seems to have changed:

Thanks very much for the reply, I might see what it rides like this weekend and maybe give it a bit of a clean.

I got my brand new Dawes Emblem in 1955 as a reward from my father for passing 5 GCE 'O' levels at one go. He had said I could have any bike I liked, but was shocked to discover it was costing him £55.

It was green, and had Derailleur gears. A great bike, but unfortunately my mother gave it away while I was working abroad in 1964.
