1991 Team Marin NOS

I’ve had this one in semi-built state for a while now, because I also, randomly, have a NOS 1996 Team Marin frameset and was going to run the builds concurrently.

Anyway. Gave up on that idea so am going to make a concerted effort to finish the ‘91 off, though it will never be a rider, given that it is a NOS frameset and will be built with period NOS parts. Plus it is the zingiest neon ever.. and we all know what our good buddy, the sun, likes to do to 30 year old neon paint, given half a chance..

Most people are familiar with the Zolatone / green version.. but this one is the more unusual alternative colourway.

Basically the bottom right colour scheme rather than the bottom left:

She would have originally come with full m730.. but given the difficulty, and extreme cost, of tracking down NOS XT of that era, the build will be a bit of a period NOS Shimano hotch potch of XT, DX and LX. I hope you can all forgive this for now. The idea is that it will be gradually replaced for XT as and when I locate it.

Anyway.. this is what I am working with:

A fairly frustrating hour or so spent fitting the XT cantis. They went onto the frame itself without any issue.. but the forks. Nightmare.

I presume the combination of unused posts, plus unused brass liners on the cantis, and of course a little oxidation meant that it took force (i.e. the gentle attention of a nylon hammer) to get them on. Whereupon they naturally wouldn’t pivot at all. Anyway, some scotch padding of contact points helped, but it will be next weekend before I cable her up and see if the cantis operate smoothly..

Grrrr.
