Shimano Deore Derailleur query

Hi,

It's possibly a bit modern for this Forum, 2000 Specialized Hard Rock, but I have to admit that the rear derailleur has finally died after years of abuse.

However, i can't seem to find what the derailleur model number is. It has 'Deore' written on it, and it's 8 speed Long (as in length). I've looked it all over, and can't see a model number or anything to identify it.

I've looked at numerous websites to find a history of Shimano derailleurs, but no joy. Most seem to focus on the XT range.

Does anyone have any ideas on what it might be? Pic attached

Over view link as you can get to the other style of list to, ie. Look up the M Number and see its years.
And then look in the Archive or catalogue section (or whatever we get next for the catalogue if old enough
Or https://si.shimano.com/#/ and tap it in for the instruction (you actually get a date too on the instruction sheet in the bottom right corner)

Off course you can look on the rear of the mech and the M-Number is on it.

You can use a Shimano 9 speed mech on an 8 speed cassette no problem.
In fact most of the 6,7,8 and 9 speed rear mechs Shimano made and still produce use the same cable pull ratios.
It's the shifter that dictates the number of gears and the cable pull required for indexing not the rear mech.

It was only with the introduction of 10 speed MTB drivetrains that interchangeable options became more limited.

There are a few exceptions to the rule but not many.

I have to check it. Im in between 9 and 10 speeds and are not compatible. Finally I ended with all in 10 speeds except one with 8. In my mind was that 9-8 were no compatible.

I run 'modern' XT 770ish (2010 era Shadow mechs) and recently releases this shadow mechs too with my old gear of 8 speed.
Just use 9speed chains, oddly proven to be better than using 8 speed chains etc. (can find links if bothered)

I think I have 10speed mechs working, but the switch to this Giga-Range* run your front rings at the back has changed the path they need to follow.


*a play on good old retro Mega-Range.
