Whyte prst-1, is it retro?

Did they really keep the original design the same until 2002-2003? I rode one of the first examples of this bike at a Polaris in the 1999-2000 model year.

My verdict? It's a complete dog to ride! You get masses of 'tuck under' on the front end when the suspension compresses at the same time as steering. Nice idea in theory, but something in the front-end geometry is seriously wrong.

Dr. Matt...

It must be classed as retro because it's sh!t :P

Aren't most of the holy grail of retro items the glorious failures? Ringle cracks, Onza brake breaks, tioga disc drives, Yeti carbon, etc etc - so the very breakable and rubbish to ride PRST1's are by their very crapness a future classic retro bike item

But think of the well-nigh endless fun to be had figuring out just WHICH of the bushes/pivots is loose/worn!

OTOH I've always rather fancied one - probably "a good thing" that this (near by) one is too big.

But it's not American.
So therefore it's not iconic - just nasty.

I ride one and its a joy to ride. Once set up it floats through the bumps and tracks lovelly. It also gets loads of positive comments and in mu opinion is a classic design.

Years ago I rode a demo one and took it for a weekend in the Lakes, it was a complete dog on smooth tracks and roads but it seemed to work wonderfully up / down garburn pass. I climbed higher before falling off than I have ever before and then blew away anybody near me descending... strangely I wanted lockout for the road sections.

As to it being retro, its all relative, doesnt an antique have to be a certain age before its officially an antique, stop being weird, if you want it buy it. ;o)

You don't find the front end tucks under when you're climbing and it compresses? The one I rode was very early, maybe they'd sorted out the front end by the time yours was made...
