Any issues fitting a Manitou 4 suspension fork on a '98 Kona Kilauea?
I'm running a Project II from an '03 Unit at the moment, this seems to work fine. Was'nt sure if the earlier Manitou would be too short :?

Any help would be, err... helpfull 8)

How long is the Manitou?
Shove a skewer through the dropouts as a reference and measure up to the fork crown.

The (normal) rigid P2 mimics 80mm sus forks. So even if the Manitou is really short travel it would probably be rideable.

I swap between a small-wheeled folding bike and a 29er... you can get used to most things.

Now then Sunny-boy! :)

Looks like the 98 Kilauea came with Bomber Z3's which had 70 mm of travel, the Manitou 4 had about 50 mm so it will be a little lower at the front. Probably making it slightly sharper steering and your weight slightly more forward. Will you feel the difference? 20 mm = 4/5".

Sit on your bike and lean against the wall, place your hands on the bars as normal, now try and place them just under the bars, (without falling off! ) That in effect will be your new riding position, how does it feel? You could counteract the change in riding position just by getting a loftier/shorter stem and adjusting your seat. Hell, you might prefer the new position!

Cheers
Steve

Not sure what length the Manitou 4's are :? They're from about '94/'95 so I guess they won't have 80mm travel... more like 50 - 60mm :o

I think the 98 Kilauea was designed for a fork of around 43cm length unloaded (crown race to axle centre) - i.e., that's roughly the length of a Judy SL (63mm) or a Z2 (70mm). Equivalent to c41.5 with a rider on board. The period P2 was 41cm long and I think the 03 Unit still had a 41cm P2, but you might want to check. No surprise that you find that ok, as you wouldn't notice the fractionally quicker steering.

I'd expect the Manitou 4 to be a bit shorter than 43, but not so much as to cause you severe problems. How long is it out of interest?

Ay-up Steve! I'll give it a try. If it's no good I'll just have to fit my NOS SID's ('97) 8)

How was HONC btw? Paul had a bit if a nightmare by all accounts

HoNC was hard fella, my face was like this > and at other times like this >

Paul had problems with his rear mech as did a lot of others according to the Marshals who went around later with their dustpans and brushes to sweep them all up! I lost my front brakes on some tricky descent - I was wondering why the lever was travelling back to the bar and hardly stopping me, dig those heels in! Stopped at the cake shop for food and a look and there were no leaks? A mile or so later I stopped again (horrible noise from the front disc) and removed the pads for a look, there was just the backing plate there! No braking surface at all just a shiny piece of metal! Quick swap over of pads from the rear to the front sorted the braking. Just needed the use of an Iron Lung to sort me out!

Sounds tempting for next year doesn't it? Actually it was a great event, once the rose tinted specs start to make me see it in a different light I'll be up for it again. Kidding again, of course I'm up for it!
:D
