Stick with the old or in with the new?

Should i ditch my HT XT - V Brake Kona bike in favour of a new Front Suspension HT with hydraulic discs? I ride for fun, and just wanted to know is there a big difference. Is it really worth it?

Keep the old bike for sure at least until you get a chance to have a go on something more modern to see if you prefer it. I'd say have both!

A modern will be more comfortable with all the bounce and whiz bangery about it, but there is something about the older hard tails that are just good fun. I also find that the older bikes, particularly the Kona's etc seem to get a lot of nods and smiles from people now as it reminds them of yesteryear.

I am with raidan73, keep both until you can decide from experience, not what people think you should do.

Keep both. For ever. Although the only FS bike I've ever had that I liked was a Marin Mountvision Pro from 99.
I've had a San Andreas - too soft
Giant Trance X - never felt like the back end was connected properly

I'm an old school rigid/HT rider I think. Always go back to steel.

A lower end modern FS will be a degree heavier than your current ride. You won't get much benefit from the bounce at the rear unless you are using it on something a little rough.

Thought about sticking some suspension forks on your current ride?

You mention having stripped it, so it would be easy enough to throw some bargain short travel forks on to see how you get on.

There is a 94 Explosif on Ebay already refinished in 19" flavour. I bet it doesn't go for more than it would cost you all in to have yours done.

Just a thought. :)

Modern bikes suit modern trail centres, old bikes suit oldschool mtb so have both. We wouldn't be true to this site if we told you to ditch the old bike

I am having a wobble. The usual I expect. I dug out my old bike with the intention of replacing the chain and tyre, now its completey stripped and thinking of a getting it painted. Now im thinking I should have sold the bike on here and used it towards a bike with discs and front suspension. Arrrgh I don't what to do. My head tells me save the dosh but my heart says NO rebuild it.

Rebuild it.
You have the skills!
Hang the expense!
[$6million man]You can make it faster, stronger etc... [/$6million man]

Modernize you old bike

Get some suspension fork for it and have a disc brake tab welded on the back, repray it get some new decals, fit some XT disc brakes and you have the best of both worlds.

That’s what I plan to do to my next build.
