Righty ho. Rather than let the sprwaling multi-headed hydra continue to wreak havoc through off topic thought I'd consilidate things into one thread.

I want this thread used as a platform used for GENERAL discussion regarding behaviour and attitude on this forum. If you have concerns regarding a specific case please PM me.

One good thing to come out of this 'incident' is there have been some really useful and well worded responses, it'd be good to continue to poll such well thought out opinions.

So. Here are my thoughts and comments.

➡️ If you have a concern regarding the behaviour or actions of another user your first action should be to PM myself or another moderator in confidence. We have acted in 1000s of cases on this forum. More often than not any issue can be resolved by a quiet word.

➡️ It is not my perception this is anything other than a friendly place still. If you want rude check out some of the other mtb forums.

➡️ I have to say we've had our concerns regarding the often rather bawdy nature of the General / Off Topic section. However given many of you who have since spoken up against this are happy to participate in such threads often we let things run. Moderation is often a tough call. Sometimes is best to let stuff run it's course (even if you don't like it) rather than attempt to step in.

➡️ Freedom of speech / censcorship. At the end of the day this is a privately owned and run website. We do try not to be heavy handed and let things run, but ultimately our decision and judgement is final. If you are moderated or PM'd on something my advice is to accept this and move on.

➡️ We do try and let people have their say on any given issue. Sadly the flip of this (for you) is that we will let someone whose opinion you may not like or disagree with also have their say.

➡️ One beauty of the internet is you can walk away easily. Sometimes it's a good idea to shut that laptop lid and go back to the real world for a bit.

➡️ I always try to act and speak to people online as I would in the real world (in fact I'm far more abrasive in real life ;) ). I suggest we all try and act this way.

There you go. I hope this thread can generate some good debate. Maybe we need to step in more in this section. If people feel this way then we will act appropriately.

I think this is a good idea for the current events that have happened, i missed them all but have glanced through some the threads, and seen what can only be described as handbags at best.

It is sad it happened but best people try and move on, to ensure that it all migrates to this thread currently and in the future i would suggest locking the current threads and any new ones that pop up that are linked to the goings on

You're always going to get clashes (both in beliefs and egos) when there's over 10,000 people in "one place". It's human nature I'm afraid. If you don't like my favourite crisps that's fine but the tone of "discussion" is definitely a bit sour at present. It's getting a bit like another cycling "forum" that I used to frequent. Let's not sink as low.

One love, one heart, one soul as a bunch of chaps from my fair city once said 8)

A fairly regular reader and infrequent poster (well incomparison by some) I go away for a couple of days to race my lawnmower at the world championships and it all kicks off on here  .
I always thought it was quite friendly on here and haven't felt persecuted by anyone even though I only have a Claudbutler and Muddyfox :D :D :D . I tend to be on the side of the fence that if you having nothing nice to say don't say anything at all.
Moderation is hard work and it nice to be a member here on EVO magazine and a couple of other smaller forums where moderation is rarely needed or done as there are far worse places on the web to be.

Carl.

I also missed it all 'kicking off' but have read a couple of the threads that survive.

I must say that for me this site has been a joy so far and is by far the most easy going site I've been a member of (you should check out the Leeds United forum I read  ). Yes, I sometimes feel like I'm butting in on a personal conversation and my opinion/comment is ignored but I'm big enough and daft enough not to worry about this.

I have been on 2 rides through the forum and often chat to people I've met. I find that most of the people I chat to through the threads and PM's are people I've met or know the same retro riders. I guess it's natural to respond to and notice threads by people you have bumped into through rides or had a good experiance with through sales?

I know a few of my local pals feel a bit on the outside of the site and say they'll ask a question that doesn't get answered but then someone else will ask a similar question the next day in the same section that'll go to 5 pages. I point out that people may have just missed the thread as they tend to need a spark or are as the paragraph above.

Been interesting hearing the views of members towards swearing. Must admit I used to not swear or I'd **** words out but have been less careful recently due to what I believed to be the site limits (going from other posts). In real life I have quite a potty mouth but do not need to bring that here so will moderate the words I use in future.

As has been metioned a site with so many members will always have people that have different views. I remember a thread during the postal strikes that made me wonder if I was in the right place but when it comes down to it we're all here for a shared love of old bikes. If we respect each other and our differences and I'm sure retrobike will continue to be top of my favourites list for years to come. 8)

Please forgive the ramble.... I've had a beer.

As a relative newcomer and very much feeling on the outside for the most part, I think that the seriousness of recent events is being overblown.

Been using internet forums for close to 10 years now and, drawing on those 10 years experience, this was just a minor blip.. .. ..

Perhaps it appears serious because the general vibe here is exceptional..

Even the nicest communities (online and 'real world') have the occasional scrap.. .. .. .. .. ..

As a relative newcomer I think you have hit the nail more squarely on the head in this post than in any other post I have seen on the subject.

As a relative newcomer

I just glance over at your joining date after seeing your number of posts....blimey!!!

As has been mentioned before, this is a blip, nothing to worry about, although people do need reminding now and again about the nature and language of their posts..... like potty mouth me a few days ago!!!

Time to move on, as I'm sure everyone has learnt their lesson... 8)

Now listen to one of the forefathers....
