Kurt Cobain took a shotgun and said goodbye to the world i remember it like it was yesterday how time flies to make you feel old.

My favourite tune of all time from them though was the cover of Bowies Man Who Sold the World

How time flies, eh? Funnily enough I was thinking about this yesterday when I saw the Mark & Lard thread, his death was first announced on the show they had back then lovingly called the Graveyard Shift, back when Radcliffe was called 'Scrawn'. Straight onto Ceefax to check it was true in the morning.

Bowie was pretty stroppy about that cover for a while:

"In the wake of this cover, Bowie bemoaned the fact that when he performed the number himself he would encounter "kids that come up afterwards and say, 'It's cool you're doing a Nirvana song.' And I think, 'F**k you, you little tosser!'""

17 years, quite literally half a lifetime ago.

Wonder how his legacy would've been remembered had his demons not got the better hand.

Indeed.

He was hell-bent on splitting Nirvana up, and the REM/Stipe collaboration would have been interesting - the Unplugged session was supposed to act as a taster for what lay ahead.

It is weird how Dave Grohl is arguably more famous to the young 'uns.

That would've been an intruiging collaboration. REM have certainly not got the same profile they enjoyed early 90s.

It is indeed easy to just think of Grohl as the drummer from Nirvana. Clearly a hugely successful artist in his own right.

It hit Stipe pretty hard, Kurt and River Phoenix dying within months of each other. New Adventures was the last time REM sounded anything like a cohesive band to my ears, and it was a fraught album which nearly split them.

Dave Grohl certainly deserves the respect he's got. Foo Fighters aren't really my cup of tea, but the first album was/is a belter.

courtenay was very famous before his death too.

i dont think it is odd that grohl is famous really, he is a very talented musician and song writer and an ex member from one of the biggest bands on the planet at the time - i am pretty sure he had plenty of offers

it really doesnt feel like 17 years since his death. drugs, eh.

yeah your right, he is very good
and again your right. she was very famous before him, with hole.
but i think its what she has now become known for. how many of the younger generation know her for anything other than that
