Had a killer hangover this morning so decided the best way to get rid was a nice fresh (by that I mean fookin freezing!) ride around the forests near to where I'm working at the moment, in Germany.
Got wrapped up nice and warm and headed off along the very slippery roads towards the forest.
Once at the edge, I took a new route for me and stumbled across some lovely snowy single-track so stopped to take some pics......
I started to get cold(er) so put the camera away and headed deeper into the forest.
After a mile or so I got spat out of the single-track and back onto the fire roads. Even these were a real struggle to ride on due to the volume of snow, and fighting for the compacted stuff with cross country skiiers
Soon spotted a nice looking path off the main route and was rewarded with some nice technical sections that ended up by a river.
Stopped again for some pics, and even took one with me in it
Headed back through the route I'd just ridden and then further into the forest, but keeping mainly to the fire roads.
Said hello to two very attractive skiiers (sorry lads, no pics
) and then the sun burst through...
Followed the path up a slight incline and then stumbled across an abandoned cold war bunker complex
This is a remnant of when the US army were a huge presence in Erlangen. There is also a large tank training area elsewhere in the forest.
Stopped for a quick bite to eat (wine gums
) and a drink and had a chat to two horse riders abouts the merits of our respective modes of transport. Conclusion was that theirs were more efficient but mine was way cooler
Then decided upon some more 'off piste' action and ended up hopelessly lost, in an area of the forest where the snow seemed twice as deep as everywhere else, and had some drive train issues which resulted in me walking for about a mile until I hit something I could ride on sensibly.
Its fair to say that the old Jamis was feeling every one of her 22 years in these conditions...
Was suprised to see some familiar markings on some of the trees on my return journey too...
All in all a great afternoons riding and so glad I didn't just lay in bed feeling sorry for myself
