Which is the lightest incarnation of the Kona Explosif?

1995 / 97 ? Max vs. 853?

Is one year considered the 'best year' ?

Cheers

:D

there is no best year. that depends and which era of bike you like.
97 should technically be the best of the 95/96/97 frames as it had matured using the same tubing.
but a search will find you many topics debating which is best with the conclusion it is up to you ;-)

lightest.. no idea frame size might be significant if they used size specific alterations like some other companies. I don't know. I do know the 20" 1997 is not particularly light compared. to other companies 20" frames. but it ain't heavy.

According to the manuals in the archive

'95 Columbus Max = 4.2lbs http://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/v/Manufacturer+Archive/Kona/Catalogues/1995+Kona+Cat.pdf.html

vs
'97 Max Nivacrom - 4.0lbs http://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2...alogues/Kona+Catalogue+1997/97Page16.jpg.html

Wieght weren't given in the '98 catalogue for the 853, but there is a member here who logged the weights of his components for his 853 Explosif. His weighed in at 4.7lbs, but that was with lots of fresh powdercoat, bolts, and seatclamp

1997 20" explosif with not thick paint is 4.6lb as In my sig.
not Mega light. BUT in 20" size the MAX OR tubing works really well.

iirc konas weights are probably based on a select sample of unpainted 18" frames.
Anthony might have a record of peoples frame weights.

This is why I'm glad to be under 5'7"! My 16" cindercone frame with seatclamp and a handful of bolts was 4.4lbs.... :P

Interesting! Cheers for the input.

I have just re-finished a '98 in 16" and in the hand, the frame feels super light for a steel MTB.

But the 95 has some funky tube profiles, so I'm lusting after one of those now .. :P

There are some views on the Tange Ultimate, Columbus Max and Reynolds 853 Explosifs here

Adjusted to size 18, my frame weights are 4.22 for both the 1994 and 1996 and 4.5 for the 98. The 1997 Columbus frame may weigh a fraction more than the 96, owing to its beefier stays. It's important to understand though that light does not equal good. The 853 Explosif is a quarter pound heavier only because of a positive design choice in favour of strength and stiffness. Similarly, the 94 could have been lighter if Joe Murray had used a Superlight down tube rather than the ribbed Ultrastrong tube. Would that have made it better? Joe didn't think so.

Which is the best is a question with no one answer. The heavier you are, the more the 853 or 97 Columbus would suit you. But if you think in terms of which is the coolest, a lot of people would go for the Tange Prestige Explosifs, in which case the 1994, being the last of the Prestige Explosifs, and the first with suspension geometry, has all angles covered.

So would that not make the 95 explosif the best columbus explosif, seeing as the front triangle is columbus max or, but it has db chromo rear stays for stiffness, not to mention the funky shaped tubes
