I recently purchased a set of Crossmax SL SSC wheels from velofrog, which arrived with me last week.
Upon cleaning them this morning, I noticed a small hairline crack coming from one of the rim eyelets
. I have not ridden the bike since I fitted the wheels.
Now, I should clarify that I've been in touch with velofrog, and he has very kindly sorted me out with a partial refund, which I am more than happy with and very grateful to him for doing, being as I couldn't prove that the crack was there before he sent the wheels to me. Velofrog was unaware of the crack when he owned the wheels and I've no reason to doubt him
So, my issue isn't what to do about it from a buyer/seller point of view, but whether or not the wheel would still be safe to ride? The wheels will never be subject to much abuse (even less so now I'm aware of the crack!) and they won't be ridden on a regular basis. Since the photo below was taken, I've marked the end of the crack with a permanent marker, so that I can monitor it to see whether or not it spreads.
My issue is that they're such a lovely set of wheels! I don't want to have to relegate them to the shed if they're 'safe enough' to ride lightly (I only weigh 10 stone too, so there won't be a lot of weight on them), but on the other hand I don't particularly want to be riding around on a rear wheel which could collapse at any moment! Any advice would be much appreciated.
I'm thinking about eventually buying a replacement rim and having the wheel rebuilt, but that would set me back almost as much as I paid for the wheels in the first place!
