Hi,

Id like to replace my '97 RC36 Medium (red) springs with some hard (blue) ones. Can anyone help?

Current springs are made from ~3.5mm wire, 210mm long, 20mm OD, 13mm ID.

Thanks,

I suspect that might be the case!

I've since spoken to a few companies (including Reliable Spring in Tipton who made MTB springs in the 90's and suggested they need to be made from EN10270-1DH steel so they are durable and won't fatigue) and Small Order Springs http://www.sosltd.co.uk who can make some for a reasonable price once they have the specification. Perhaps we could place one order for several pairs so its easier for them.

Does anyone know the rating of the hard spring and how many coils it has? Im sure I saw a spec on a site/document somewhere but now I can't find it. The wire gauge, diameter, length and end finish are known.

Re:

Subject to pricing I’d be up for a set.

I’ll point justbackdated to this thread, he may be able to help as I believe he used to work for pace so could have (or get) the info needed.

Edit: pm sent to justbackdated.

Do you know what colour the spring is, i have a two spare sets different colour I can check.

Ah, wow great!

There are two required - I have red ones and would like blue.

According to an old MBR article its Yellow for Soft, Red for Med and Blue for hard. According to some search results, it seems earlier springs are all one colour, whereas newer ones (where there was an initial spring too) had a simple painted stripe to identify their rating.

Re:

Unfortunately ALL Pace hard springs are like rocking horse cack!

The 1997 springs can be recognised easily as they all are painted fully; yellow-soft, red-medium, blue-hard. They are progressively wound with coils closer at one end.

The 1998 springs have a rough stripe of paint on them, same colours as '97 although some of the mediums are marked with pink, also progressively wound but shorter than the '97.

The 1999/2000 Evo2/3 springs are not progressively wound, and this is where it gets tricky, there were medium and hard only, colours as before; red-medium, blue-hard, but......not all of the springs were marked!!! They are a slightly larger outer diameter than the earlier springs.

I'm not going to even try to explain the springs in the PC2 or RC40, all a right mare!

Hope that helps in the search, they do come up occasionally. I will look into getting some made also.
