Just popped open my XC700 I've been riding around on for a year or so, though I'd better service them (commuter).
Air pressure has never really done anything OR lost anything.

Found out why, they have springs in them.

Was this a common mod BiTD for XC700 or similar XC Marzocchi forks?

This was a tuning option and people like it sometimes, if the seals are broken or if they are some kind of 'heavy weight' rider.

Well they're apart and new seals will be fitted, they're not bad but may as well change them.
Bushings are not the best but cannot remember their dimensions, so probably just reuse them.
Wiper seal is past it's best, but it's not super important and I may have one somewhere (that maybe original bomber one I have though)

Everything else looks fine, so they need a good clean to get rid of the mud/water/oil goop.
So much easier to service than XCR's

Do you have any documents on the spring tuning ?
(I know they basically end up like bombers a bit there, where the spring is the main spring and air can be tuned slightly (from the oil height or with a change to air top caps, but I have little need for them.)

There was water inside? Does the stanchion tubes under the white plastic become swell up?

I don't have any special documentation. I found not that much information about. There where different brands (e.g. Reset, RTech and other) and different versions for different riders weight. Some had be coulored, some had caps on one or both sites, some cames without.

I have collected a box of it.

@FluffyChicken
Springs = lower plesure inside forks = longer life of seals (probably that's why Your forks not laking oil after year of commuting) ;) I suggest You keept that tuning kit inside ;)

... but don't run them dry!

Re:

:-)

It also explains the squeek I had in them and the horrible top out clunk.

The plastic spacer bit is fine, seems to be a touch of dirt under it, nothing damaging :-)

With a good clean up, fresh oil ( well oil and not muddy water goop) they be good to go again.

Not touched XC700 to service before. Have done XCR and never got them apart so are a piles of spares in a box :-)

I don't need them for the commuter, but they look nice and do take the curbs (on cycle 'paths') and pothole sting out.

...

You mean you have a noice, when the fork expands ... rebounds?

The sleeve bearing bushings have a small rubber ring to damp the movement in the end, when the fork expands fully. This might be defect?

Edit: It shows bottom up.
