Fisher RS-1....disc brake ??

Thumpic

Retro Newbie
Hey Guys.......I'm new to this forum. I found another thread about this brake. It is described as a Hope brand. I am wondering about the cable routing. The pic I attached is how it was routed when I found it. The pic posted in the other thread shows the cable routed in the same fashion. Both pics show the rear housing guide not being used. I think they are both wrong and the cable should enter from the rear of the brake assembly and that the housing pushes the lever instead of the cable pulling it. But if that is the case it looks like a proprietary part or two may be missing......right?? Need some expert help and pics.

Thanks in advance..

So the factory cable guides are to be ignored? I've got no problem with that, I just want it to be as correct as possible. I also hate zip ties on a bike.......

Thanks!

Yup, that cable routing's fine.
The cable fittings were designed for the Mountaincycles brake fitted on earlier frames:

They were pretty rubbish, so were replaced with the Hope brake by Fisher, with the cable just zip tied on:

You could run the cable in a loop like the MountainCycles to get rid of the zip ties, but you'd have to change the Hope cable fittings and do something to make a cable clamp/anchor.

Have you got the Lawill leader front fork with a Hope disc, too?

RetroBike member Fairfax Pat's your man for all things RS-1...he was involved with the original design.

All the best.

That's exactly how I did it...I don't like the cable ties, but they do work. I've never had a bike with a disc brake before. I'm less than impressed. I just ordered some new stainless cables to see if that will help.

Thanks for your help!

Where did those snappy red elastomers come from? :) I found a couple of heavy valve springs that I think will work.

Re:

The RS-1 came with a kit of 3 grades of elastomer, blue black and red. I can't remember which is which, but the different colour are different hardnesses for rider weight.

All the early discs are pretty terrible...MountainCycles, Hope or AMP/Rockshox. They've come a very long way in 25 years...

If you think the Hope's poor, you should try the MountainCycles brake. Closed system with no adjustment, so the fluid heats up on a long downhill, expands and puts the brake on. You need to stop while it cools and you can go on your way. Like an automatically imposed tea break/breather.

All the best,

I made a simple adaptor to run a m**ern cable caliper
made a tremendous improvement

It's my RS-1 and I agree, it's a hope brakeset.
I'm thinking to find a solution for using the original cable stop, but for that, I need to use the housing for pulling the lever of the caliper, and not the cable as actual…

But Danson67 said all what you need to know and I agree, the Hope caliper could be adjusted :D
For the spring/bumpers, I had to change them : too old and too smooth. But if the suspension is heavy, it's one of the best system I have ridden and a very good climber too ! :D
