Marin Mount Vision Rear Shock

I'm hoping to get some advice or pointed in the right direction. I have a Marin Mount Vison which Believe is from '97. It was my late fathers from new, has only been used a handful of times and is all original. I want to get it back working so it can be used again. It all works fine apart from the rear shock. When I ride it it just bounces, theres no damping ( think thats the right term?). Is there an idiots guide to servicing it or can I be pointed in the right direction? It shouldn't be broken due to the lack of use, I hope anyway! The rear shock is the original Shock Works.
I'm new on here but as I find my way around I'll post bits on my other bikes, road, more mountain and BMX's :-).

original shock wasnt very good, not sure they are serviceable but most are in some way.
easier option, you can replace with a modern shock for not much money, just need the length (eye-to-eye) of the shock and the stroke length. for example 200mm x 57mm (That might even be right for this frame, not certain though). a nice air shock would be better in just about every way.
 
As Rick has already said, those shock works shocks were pretty unreliable. Oddly spec'd shock on a bike that high in the range.
While it's theoretically possible to service it and source some appropriate seals and someone to do the work, it would be cheaper and less time consuming to find a suitable replacement of the correct dimensions.
It really wouldn't take much away from the originality of the bike and would greatly improve the usability too.

Thanks for the advice so far, appreciate it. So a new shock seems to be the way to go. I'll have to find out the size and get looking.

165mm x 38mm stroke.
I may have a half decent Fox Float one somewhere I could sell you. It will come with the correct mounts to fit directly onto your frame too.

165 x 38 is the shox size.
Scrap the one fitted and get a newer air shox.

Put it up on wanted area to see who has one lying around.

Before getting another shock it would be better to remove the existing one and measure it i2i to be sure.
The frame appears to be a biggish one so that makes me think that shock is longer than 165mm. Not saying it is but the Marins we have all have different length shocks.

See this thread viewtopic.php?f=21&t=291120&start=0 for info on sizes, as there are 3 different lengths of shock depending on frame size and version.
 
Trust me when I tell you I'm intimate with all the Marin full suspension frame designs. The Mount Vision front end always uses a 165mm shock.

I'll dig one of the Fox shocks out and show you. Very serviceable and very reliable.
