Clear lacquer for bare steel

Has anyone got any tips for getting the best finish for a bare steel frame. Going to try it but would appreciate advice on how to get the best polished finish and the most hard-wearing type of clear lacquer to use.

Due to an accident can't ride for a couple of months so I'm getting around to finishing some projects that have been hanging around.

Should have explained myself more fully in my post.

I have a nickel plated Marin Team Issue which has some areas where the plating has been damaged and rust showing through. Because of the cost of re-plating I've decided to polish and lacquer those areas only, so a full clear powder coat is probably not an option
