Thats one garish and cool paintjob but that bit at the front of the top tube looks disconcerting like a iffy repair unless its supposed to look like that. No idea what it is but looks good

Nice fine...NOS too! What's the story with the steeplejack? Frame looks vaguely 'woodsy' (like the beast of the east), could of course be totally wrong.

Anyone any background on American? Aware of the brand but not their history...

I would say its scarce...that one has a 24" rear wheel and a 26" front.

I've only ever seen M-16 and Comp Lites

American was the company that made the ridiculously expensive beryllium frame (that got stolen at Interbike IIRC) and the $999 beryllium brake booster.

It looks like a top tube gusset with cable guide welded on it.

Cool and weird frame either way.

Beryllium. Horribly toxic stuff, has to be machined with breathing apparatus (quite apart from its habit of bursting into flame when machining). It was used on some military aircraft I believe.
