OK, so new plan.....
In light of the fact that it now appears that the aluminium steerers are available and replaceable for Marzocchi forks, and that the general consensus from feedback on the Z2's on my Kilauea is that they need "addressing", I have sourced what could be some donor forks for a rebuild.
They are silver Z5's, with air valves in the top of both stanchions, which I know otherwise nothing about. What I plan is to strip and paint up the lowers of whichever are the better forks. Both sets of lowers are in good nick, and there are no marks or wear to the stanchions
I have the tech manuals for the Z2's and Z5's... however...
With a steel steerer, the Z5's are obviously heavier, but if I could replace it, which are the better forks, the Z2 Atom Race's or the Z5 Air's?
