Setting chain length with a mid-length rear derailleur cage

I run my bikes now as I did 27 years ago, I don't need a dinner plate on the back wheel.

Bikes at a busy retailer were set up for big big as 90% of the customers would have no working knowledge or mechanical sympathy. They just rode their bike as they saw fit.

The other 10% would go home and rip everything off to upgrade to their preferences be it 3x 2x or 1x

Real men have a 30T front oval , and a 10-52 at the back

Holy crap, 30T driving a 52?
That's a 17" gear on a 29er - I don't even need that on a tourer with 4 panniers!
What do you use it for, rock climbing? :?

I haven’t got that gearset. I was taking the Michael

My winter hardtail is 32 oval and 10-50.
My new trail bike is 34 and 10-50
My gravel is 40 and 10-46

I live in the peaks so we have hills and I love climbing up rocky technical stuff.

Like mentioned already above, i can find myself in big/big or small/small if i suddenly hit a technical section and need to change quick, then sort the better combo out when it eases, never had an issue and its just one of those things when out riding.

I also ride a lot of places that are flat and quite suited to singlespeed or 1X set up, which i currently run on my main bike, though i do find that when i ride one of my 3X setups i am a hell of a lot quicker and a lot less tired, something that seems to get overlooked/forgotten a lot these days. Also riding in the Peak a 3X setup is a lot nicer to ride with all the hills and constantly varying terrain.

Ah, those hazy days of '89, when real men had 28-38-48 up front, and 12-28 out back, and legs to match.

Off-topic slightly, but relevant to your comment, I watched this yesterday...
36 miles, 400 riders, water crossings, much carrying of a 30lb+ bike, Carlsberg, and bonus Phil Liggett!!!

All on 3x7 gearing ;)
