Here is is a very early time trial special 753 in a large size 59.5 cm c-t

I remember that frame being ridden by the original owner. At the time it was slightly unusual for someone to be riding a frame from a 'mass-production' builder rather than a small local specialist builder. This attitude gradually changed over the next few years as the quality of the Raleigh 753 frames became more appreciated and were ridden by more and more top riders.

Large frame would be 26.8mm seat post IIRC as they beefed up the tubes (smaller inside diameter) for the larger frames.

Shaun do you know how long they did this for?
my Reynolds tech books list all 753 seat tubes as 28.6 outer diameter, Gauge 0.7/0.5 SB with seatpost size 27.2
they go back to early 80s but im to young for the 70s

SB 4314 will be 1981-1982 . Pics would be nice :)

Carlrh.........not sure when they changed but I do remember the Raleigh reps bringing round 753 frames and being told that they would not take the standard 27.2mm 531 seat post. That would be for any size 753 frame. We generally only stocked 27.2 seat posts for the lightweight side of things.

Not sure when they all went to 27.2mm as I thought 753 was a metric size and 531 imperial.

Re:

753R (and T) came out around 1983 and these were imperial, they took 27.2 or 27.4mm posts

Came across this snippet on t'internet which seems to make sense..........

As written by Mike Mullett - :

1) 753 is Metric-diameter tubing (28.0 mm O.D. for the seat and down tubes, 26.0 mm O.D. for the top tube), and was introduced in about 1975. Seat posts for 753 frames are either 27.0 (forsmall frames) or 26.8 mm (for large frames).

2) 753R and 753T are Imperial (English/Inch) diameter tubing (28.6 mm O.D. for the seat and down tubes, 25.4 mm O.D. for the top tube), and began production in 1983. Seat posts for 753R and 753T are either 27.2 or 27.4 mm.

It's this one, I asked him to weigh it because there were no 753 decals.
2800g was the lower end of the guestimate presumably because it was wobbling about on the scales.

Chainstay "dent" looks wrong for 753...........BITD it was longer and shallower, mind you I'm a child of the 70's :) Rear dropouts somehow look odd, probably the blurry photo.
