Whats your prefered treatments, prevention, remedies etc I have a frame with a good few spots and want to try to minimise the rot without a respray at the moment. Anyone use the kurust stuff or owt? I've in the past used waxoyl spray inside the tubes and some car wax but I'll have to do a wee bit of treatment first.

Any tales storys and tips welcome :D

dont know the product name but if you look on ceeway website they sell a spray to put in your frame .

Its called FrameSave or framesaver. But seams like a thiner version of waxoil to me.

Yes, I've used Kurust (mainly on an old car !) but also under the BB lug on a steel racer, and around the fork crown. And also the odd spot here and there on chrome work, just to keep further corrosion away temporarily.

You probably already know, but it reacts with the rust and forms a hard, clear layer that can then be painted over. I've always been quite pleased with results, and if you just need to tidy up an old frame quickly, you don't have to go mad cleaning all the rust away, as Kurust reacts with all of it, turning it into a hard, black substance. So not a bad idea if you want to keep an old frame in the garage, but don't have time/money to restore it now.

old engine oil sprayed inside the tubes . kept the underside of a few escorts ive had rust free for 30+ years

ive had a frame in bare metal for a few years , a wipe with gt85 once in a while has done the trick . normal rain water hasnt been a problem but sweat has caused a few outbreaks of surface rust . easily rubbed off with a scotchbrite pad

try not to leave it wet . a quick rub with a cloth to get the drips off will help a lot

I've just done an entire frame, forks and stem internally with kurust. Did it in my bath but only because I was already waiting for a new bathroom suite to be delivered. Be warned - the bath ended up very stained and pretty much ruined.

First i shook out any loose bits of dirt that had got inside the frame (bit of a pain) and sprayed loads of muc-off through all the tubes, repeated after 10 mins then rinsed with water (using the shower head on narrow spray) after another 10. Shook the water out and left leaning on a radiator for 2 days.

Sprayed degreaser through the whole frame, turned frame around a lot to spread it around internally and left for overnight next to radiator.

While waiting for the frame to dry I cleaned & dried the pump mechanism from a cleaning spray (i used a shower cleaner pumped loads of water through it first to drive out any residual cleaner, then left on a radiator to dry thoroughly.

Next was the kurust. I taped the pump mechanism into a tub of kurust. I did one tube at a time and sprayed loads so it was pooling inside. I tilted the tube so the kurust ran to the other end, then turned a little and tilted back. Repeated this until I did the whole tube 360 degrees - I had to pump in more kurust several times. Repeated this for every tube and used a ton of kitchen role to mop up all the dribbles from bottle mounts and drainage holes etc... be warned - it got very messy!

Left frame for 30 mins then repeated the kurust. Then left it for a day.

Next, to give it some ongoing protection (kurust is only treatment not protection) I got a spray can of silver hammerite direct-to-rust metal paint. Masked up the BB threads and repeated the same procedure as with kurust (again using a ton of kitchen roll to keep cleaning the spills). I used a small piece of rubber hose, about 3 mil diameter attached tightly over the spray nozzle so i could insert it right into the tubes and spray directly into them.

Left for 2 hours and repeated

Left by radiator for a week thoroughly dry (also cos i was busy with other things!)

Don't know if it's covered 100% inside, but I'm pretty confident. At the very least I know most of it is - including everywhere that water might settle.

It wasn't as painful a job as it sounds - just a hour or so each day for a week. It did get very messy in stages and I was lucky my batch was disposable! I didn't actually use the entire can of hammerite so the weight gain (if you care about it) is pretty minimal and worth doing for a 15 year old frame that definitley had some light corrosion inside.

Sounds like you went through the same suffering as me ! I used to scrape off the old Zibart underseal that Ford used, and spray on Schutz sealant. I've still got my Schutz airgun and about 3 tins of the stuff ! What a messy job that was !

To prevent rust, just keep on top of the cleaning, to kill rust if I have been lazy and not cleaned the bike, I use plain old vingar. Sometimes if the rust is being stubborn, I mix in lemon juice, then just wipe the residue away. For normal corrosion protection, I just spray the frame and associated bits with GT85, and let it dry, then alcohol wipe the braking surfaces and saddle.

My problem here though, is the sea air, my being tem minutes walk from the sea, anything rubber rots quickly and bare aluminium develops a white coating, so the spray oil is very necessary and cheap considering.

Tyres, the side walls they get regularly treated to black boot polish, it delays the decay, looks good and sheds mud easily. Just with a gloved finger massage the polish into your rubber and then wipe off and buff up the surface.

I've used Fogging Oil inside tubes to prevent rusting. It's a corrosion preventative designed to be, amongst others things, sprayed inside marine motors when not in use.
