Repairable or wall hanging ?

It is easily weldable, but you need to get the correct seatpost diameter and run at least 4 inches into the tube after repair. It will take a good 6 months to regain some good age hardening, so a long insertion is best.

All alum frames tend to do this eventually. Proflexes in particular because they have the short seat mast, and GT-idrives because of the window they machined just under the clamp area.

Go see your local welder and see what they say. If they have 5356 filler or equivelant heat treatable filler, and do not overheat during weld, it will work great. I have collapsing mandrels that retain the original inside diameter, but you may have to drum sand the penetration from the inside it your welder does not have them. I have 27.2 for proflex, 31.8 for trek and GT, and 30.9 for Mountain Cycle.

Is that a crack on the top tube? I'd be looking for where all the other cracks are hiding.

If you don't want to weld it and respray etc, just glue the post in!

Richie - ha ha, I did think about commenting on the merits of 'good age hardening' and 'long insertion' myself but chose not be less juvenile - most unlike me !


retrojon - It's not a crack on the top tube it is literally one slight hairline that can be seen but not felt, however the fact that it's there is enough to worry me as to what's following it.

Hey ho, if the worst comes to the worst I'll hang it and build up the slightly younger polished one instead.

Is it wrong to hanker after the days of riding a pink bike though ?

caloi's are nasty 3000 series alloy so can be welded but are not very nice to do, very cheap stuff from south america i think, im suprised it lasted this long..... you dont see many caloi's being used nowadays, most of them broke bitd.

Alcan 6000 for the 1993 one that's cracked and Alcoa 6061 T6 for the 1995 polished one according to BikePedia but that's as far as my knowledge goes on it.
To be honest I've not seen one break before but then I wasn't aware of too many knocking about at the time, just mine and the team ones.
Anyway, I think the answer is I'll promote the pink one to sentimental wall art (carried me to many a victory bitd) and get some elbow grease on the polished one and start reconsidering the spec list to suit !
