Re-spraying a frame cheaply at home...advice needed!

I've sprayed a few frames, and have been happy with the results- and I'm the fussy type. (I worked in the refinishing dept at the Gibson guitar distribution centre in Braintree in the late 70's) Anyway, I've had good results with Plastikote and similar enamels- first one I did was about 6 years ago, and it still looks very good. Enamel is slow to cure though. As many people have said, the preparation can't be hurried. And conditions for spraying must be ideal too. Powder coating is not necessarily that great if done by a non-specialist, and can be quite expensive otherwise. I'd say have a go, it's all good clean (?) fun.

To add to my last comment. My frame was blasted and coated for £30. Rugby powder coating. Would guess the cost has risen now as many things have. Also if you ever want to redo the frame powdercoating could be difficult to remove and require a harder media which could damage the frame! Paint is the best option but from experience will require a fair bit of patience. It will be harder to paint a bike frame than it would a car trust me.

Re:

Thanks to all for the help and advice. Am still really not sure what I will do, but the immediate urgency has abated as the bike is no longer needed....

In which case I might have a go at my own RockHopper, which is in a very bad way, paint wise, and couldn't possibly look worse

Weather is about to change though, so....
