Polishing aluminium frame with decals

Is there any way of polishing an aluminium frame which has had decals applied, without ruining the decals?

Please share your secret techniques with me!

Aluminium usually has a grain which means that it's best polished in one uniform direction, although it differs from tubing to tubing. I would mask the decals off as closely as you can, polish as normal and let the masking tape take the hit, obviously how tricky that's going to be it depends on what the decals are, how complex their shapes etc.
